"I just don't want to work"

Hi all... I'm new to the board and I am curious.
I am in my mid twenties, unmarried, no children. I work in an extremely competitive field with many other women my age. Many of us are making six figures and the job is very stressful. We all have a great work ethic, but sometimes when the stress gets really bad, I'll often hear the girls (never the guys) saying things like "Arrgghh... I'm so sick of work. I just want to marry a rich man, have kids, stay home and NOT WORK."....... I was raised by two working parents (two very loving, caring hardworking parents). My mother was very successful in her career, and I feel that when I get married, I will (like my mom) continue to work and raise children at the same time (my mom was definitely "super mom" ---she did it all and was great!)...... My main question: many of the women in my work stay in the position for about 5-7 years and then leave.....the funny thing is...

>>I'm not math major, but I believe our home value increased by 150%. The marginal tax rates are set by the town based on property value, minus tax relief subsidies, and plus other town income. Last year it was about $4 per thousand of assessed value. The year before, it was close to $5 per thousand of assessed value due to lower property value assessment.<<
You're right, sorry, it was late, 150%. So, basically, your town adjusts the tax rates to subsidize property taxes rather than freezing the assessment values? Doesn't sound that different to me.
>>I'm all for subsidizing the truly needy. I see no reason to subsidize based on when a house is purchased. It seems a rather arbitrary subsidy. I'll actually quite an odd duck, socially liberal and extremely fiscally conservative.<<
I think it's about as non-arbitrary as it can get, since people generally purchase homes that they can afford.
>>This should not be a problem if the city or town management the tax property tax income responsibly. The marginal tax rates would decrease with higher accessed values. RE inflation does not break that model. Bad local and state fiscal mismanagement resulted in Prop 13, which is inequitable fiscal policy, IMO.<<
Actually, it wasn't bad management, it was a crackdown on unethical assessors that caused the situation that led to Prop 13. Perhaps with a state the size of a city, like Rhode Island, adjusting marginal tax rates yearly is possible. (And cost effective.) A state that is the size of a country has more issues I'm afraid.
>>I guess I'm missing why RE inflation seemed to be a license for cities, towns, and the state to take in money without accountable management of those funds?<<
You'll have to explain where you pulled this idea from.
She's pulling it from the proverbial source of fluffy white bunnies. You can tell by the composition of the product. And the smell.

Huh? The only ones subsidized in my town are the truly needy, e.g. land rich, cash poor, with a low or fixed income. Everyone else pays the same tax rate based on assessed property value. The average increase is capped at 5% per year per tax payer, but it is usually less. That doesn't sound anything your system.
Again, Huh? Services afforded by property tax cost the same whether I bought property 7 years ago or today, there is no relationship between the ability to pay or benefits received. Why should I pay less than my new neighbor if our houses are equal in value and I have no valid need to request a subsidy?
Er, isn't that what bad management is? Who oversaw the unethical assessors? Where did the money go as the result of the unethical assessors? BTW - I actually lived in the Bay Area in the late 70s and that's not exactly how I remember it but owning property was the last thing I on my mind at that time.
The issues of sound financial management is the same on any level and California is no different than any other entity that collects taxes and fees to support itself. Progressive and regressive tax gimmicks like Prop 13 do little to achieve tax payer equality or fairness.
Actually, you can roll over your basis once after you are 55 (I think, maybe 60), as long as you buy something about the same or less than what you sell for.

According to her posts here (and she is very consistent in them), she is a great mother to her daughter and a wonderful employee. She loves her mother and supports her as well. I enjoy her viewpoint and her posts. Is that enough support for you?
