"I just don't want to work"

Hi all... I'm new to the board and I am curious.

I am in my mid twenties, unmarried, no children. I work in an extremely competitive field with many other women my age. Many of us are making six figures and the job is very stressful. We all have a great work ethic, but sometimes when the stress gets really bad, I'll often hear the girls (never the guys) saying things like "Arrgghh... I'm so sick of work. I just want to marry a rich man, have kids, stay home and NOT WORK."....... I was raised by two working parents (two very loving, caring hardworking parents). My mother was very successful in her career, and I feel that when I get married, I will (like my mom) continue to work and raise children at the same time (my mom was definitely "super mom" ---she did it all and was great!)...... My main question: many of the women in my work stay in the position for about 5-7 years and then leave.....the funny thing is...

Except it IS fair. People are being taxed on THEIR PURCHASE PRICE. If the young'uns want to pay less on taxes, buy cheaper housing. It's pretty easy. Are we going to start running around and screaming that the lady who bought a pack of gum at Target paid less than the woman who bought 500-ct sheets?

It's fair because everyone is paying on the same issue--their purchase price. I don't get all the heartache over it.

Virginia has no natural or man-made disasters? No huricanes that make it to you? No bad snow storms? No arsonists or terrorists? Why do you live there?

How does everyone benefit for from unsound and gimmicky fiscal tax policy? Is Ca better off under 30 yrs of Prop 13? School systems better? Aren't city and town user fees proliferating to make up for budget shortfalls? A tax by another name...is still a tax, just a dishonest and perhaps hidden one with little accountability.

No thanks, I'll prefer to live in a town that has a sound and prioritized budget that make difficult choices based on the needs of all in the community - both the rich and the poor. The burden and benefits should be equal. Fixed income land rich and cash poor are given relief, others struggling on a budget will never see their property tax increase more that 5% per year, and the others in the community often give back what can not be reasonably fit into the town budget, e.g new playground, computer lab, basketball courts all funded by private community donation. (Believe me, we worked to get them taxpayer funded, but we found that other options worked quite well)

What's fair about buying a home with little option for mobility? Lose a job, sol, I guess. Get a new job miles away, again, sol, I guess. It seems downright unAmerican to me

How is purchase price as tax basis fair - Please enlighten. Does inflation take a holiday once a purchase is complete? Does community services costs freeze once you buy into a community? If RE inflation increases your net worth exponentially, as it has recently, why do you get to freeze your liability to pre-inflation values?

I get the heartache because I actually try to put together (as a member of the local budget committe) a fair and equitable budget for a small town on a very limited budget. I hate cutting services as much as I hate raising taxes.

The purchase price is yesterday's news. Do you feel the same way about your initial salary offer? Why would you need a raise?

LOL, talk to me when I get a raise--I'll let you know.

However, they *are* paying an increase, campbellover has mentioned it numerous times.

I mean, if it's your position that the elderly who own property have no business wanting to live where they've always lived and should move and make way for those with higher incomes, fine, but stop claiming you're being "fair". When you steal people's property in the name of "necessary services" and tell them, too bad/so sad if you'd just SELL and LEAVE it would all be okay and WE wouldn't have to deal with the likes of YOU, it's not "fair". It's obscene.

That never was my position. I do support subsidies to cash poor, land rich people on fixed incomes, elderly or not. I do not support subsidies based on when one purchases a particular property. I see no fairness in my new neighbor paying exponentially more in property taxes when our homes are of equal value and our ability to pay fair value in taxes is also equal. I get to benefit from re inflation with the home equity added to our net worth.

If my property taxes rose at the same rate of RE inflation I'd be screaming unfairness as loud as the late Howard Jarvis, but they don't.
