"I just don't want to work"

Hi all... I'm new to the board and I am curious.

I am in my mid twenties, unmarried, no children. I work in an extremely competitive field with many other women my age. Many of us are making six figures and the job is very stressful. We all have a great work ethic, but sometimes when the stress gets really bad, I'll often hear the girls (never the guys) saying things like "Arrgghh... I'm so sick of work. I just want to marry a rich man, have kids, stay home and NOT WORK."....... I was raised by two working parents (two very loving, caring hardworking parents). My mother was very successful in her career, and I feel that when I get married, I will (like my mom) continue to work and raise children at the same time (my mom was definitely "super mom" ---she did it all and was great!)...... My main question: many of the women in my work stay in the position for about 5-7 years and then leave.....the funny thing is...

"Much of what you consider a sacrifices I see as choices. If I go out for dinner with my DH I am not sacrificing anything. I am choosing to spend my time (and money) in that way."

Your conotation of the word sacrifice is yours. Sacrifice means to surrender or give up. EVERY decision you make entails some sacrifice because you will ALWAYS have to give something else up, I give up money to stay home. You don't like that particular word, but I certainly can't think of a better one that is quite as precise. So I will stand by my use since it is accurate. If you envision some person hanging on a cross that's your Christian preconceptions of the word.

Well, it does help brand new homeowners in that you are a brand new homeowner for about a minute.

"Yes I knew that. I was just amazed that someone was able to feed their family on 60 dollars a week when I have a hard time at the commisary getting out of there for less than 150."

You don't have to believe me, but I only but items if I can get them for at least 50% off, then I buy enough to last 3 months. It's totally doable and I do it. I have a friend that has a family of 9 and she feeds them on $150/wk. Just last week I bought 6 boxes of Quaker Granola bites for $.93/box. I also bought 4 boxes of Cheerios for $1/box. It takes some effort (and about 4 Sunday newspapers a week), but you don't have to believe me if you don't want to, I really don't care.

"As are we by the thought that you behave as though those of us who WOH and possess functional ovaries don't know there's more to life than money, that we live in some rich fog that blinds us to the quality of life."

I'm tired of being attacked as holding a belief/behavior that I do not. I will repeat this again, don't take my defense of something as an attack. Believe it or not people can hold the belief that money is not everything to life, but that it is a necessity to get through life.

"It's insulting and you've voiced it several times now."

Really, how is it insulting to state that money is not everything. YOU are the one who is deriving it out as me somehow saying something more than that, when I have REPEATEDLY said that I wasn't.

"BTW, you DO have more than you need--you have TWO adults in your household, which gives you the LUXURY of letting one work while the other SAHs and tells the rest of us that we sacrifice time with our kids for material goods."

STOP telling me what I have told you. This is getting rediculous. If you can quote me EVER saying that others should stay home when they either can't or don't want to then I would be HAPPY to see it. However, I AM defending SAHMs against someone who seems to think that we just don't want to work!!

"The FACTS are it's really easy to say money isn't that important when you have a source of it that doesn't depend on YOU specifically bringing it in."

I NEVER said it wasn't important, just that it's not EVERYTHING!!!

"When I hear of someone that saves a ton with coupons, it makes me wonder just what the heck they're eating. The only coupons I see are for processed, boxed, already prepared junk. We don't eat like that."

We are a health conscious family that excercises regularly (by that I mean at least 4 times a week).

I don't think you'd find one person on this board -- not even our most accomplished members like PNJ who say money is EVERYTHING.

Yes. We. Did.

"Why do you ASSume that as a full time WOHM, I'm not "raising and educating my children"?"

I never stated anything of the sort. You are taking a statement and pulling it out to a conclusion that I have never had in mind. However, when I mention possibly homeschooling my kids I always get comments about not being a qulified teacher. Somehow I feel that they'll do fine with a mom that has a BS and used to do behavioral research and a dad that has a Masters in Engineering and Physics.

"And yes, I've invested many years and much effort and money into my education - it would be foolish in my particular case not to WOH."

Great. It's always nice to see educated women in general. I just don't see why people assume SAHM aren't educated, or that getting an education precludes you from SAH.

Luckily my dogs had me trained to keep the door open before I had kids!! Man they would howl and bark everytime I left their sight in the house.
