Hi all... I'm new to the board and I am curious.

I am in my mid twenties, unmarried, no children. I work in an extremely competitive field with many other women my age. Many of us are making six figures and the job is very stressful. We all have a great work ethic, but sometimes when the stress gets really bad, I'll often hear the girls (never the guys) saying things like "Arrgghh... I'm so sick of work. I just want to marry a rich man, have kids, stay home and NOT WORK."....... I was raised by two working parents (two very loving, caring hardworking parents). My mother was very successful in her career, and I feel that when I get married, I will (like my mom) continue to work and raise children at the same time (my mom was definitely "super mom" ---she did it all and was great!)...... My main question: many of the women in my work stay in the position for about 5-7 years and then leave.....the funny thing is...

yes, and quickly pick up and never return. what's with the people who don't learn their lesson? i'm sure thousands of them will flock back tothe area and re-build only to have them burn down again. yikes.

"Snotty" (or snooty) doesn't equal having pride in where one lives. Pride in one's home can happen anywhere (some urban renewal projects tapped into this by enlisting residents of housing projects to do the landscaping themselves, to great positive effect). But I'd definately call it snotty (or snooty) when the goal of the HOA goes beyond the faux-municipal (upkeep of pools, snow removal and such) and veers off into extremes of enforced uniformity.

I have rhododendrons (but not PVC fencing) and don't live with a HOA. The nice thing about this is that I can have whatever sort of plants I like in front of my house. And so can the neighbors. And we all have many different sorts of fences and some have no fences at all. We all have pride in our homes but we ALSO have very different taste from each other and when you don't live with a HOA, very different taste amongst neighbors is allowed and not seen as some sort of negative.

Some folks just love where they live that much. There are natural disasters of every kind everywhere. I choose earthquakes over hurricanes, snow blizzards, or floods, but

say you have a neighbor that is selling and the potential seller will not buy because of this neighbor who is too lazy to clip shrubs or take down holiday lights? i'm sure you would care then! property values would go down.

Then perhaps you do have the Addams family house. But so what? I live about 2 blocks from that house. A few times I've been sorely tempted to take a photo of it to email my family because it is so comically EXACTLY like the Addams family house that it looks like a movie set. The architecture is the same (I live in an old Massachusetts area), the paint is peeling and the lawn is overgrown. If somebody from Hollywood walks past it by chance (Ben Affleck has been in Boston for "Gone Baby Gone") it could easily wind up as a backdrop in a horror movie. It's just that much exactly like the Addams family house. And you know what? The property values here are still stunningly high so no worries.
