"I just don't want to work"

Hi all... I'm new to the board and I am curious.

I am in my mid twenties, unmarried, no children. I work in an extremely competitive field with many other women my age. Many of us are making six figures and the job is very stressful. We all have a great work ethic, but sometimes when the stress gets really bad, I'll often hear the girls (never the guys) saying things like "Arrgghh... I'm so sick of work. I just want to marry a rich man, have kids, stay home and NOT WORK."....... I was raised by two working parents (two very loving, caring hardworking parents). My mother was very successful in her career, and I feel that when I get married, I will (like my mom) continue to work and raise children at the same time (my mom was definitely "super mom" ---she did it all and was great!)...... My main question: many of the women in my work stay in the position for about 5-7 years and then leave.....the funny thing is...

"Yes, you have to question the mentality of someone who would paint their door yellow. What else are they going to do next?"

If it was anyone else who posted this sentence, I would assume snark. But you are actually serious. I wouldn't actually question mentality of someone who would paint their door yellow. It just doesn't strike me as unhinged. It would take something like a swastika on the door or huge hostile spikes pointed outwards or anything else that made it look like walking through that doorway would be the last thing you would live to do.

But I don't think that it is mentally unbalanced for people to have different taste from each other. There is nothing abnormal about individuality and individual taste. Some people really LIKE yellow. Or mint green. Or purple. Some people like no paint at all and varnish their door (me). So "what are they going to do next?" wouldn't be a question I would ask myself.

"What are they going to do next?" is a question I often ask myself about homes with thematic extravaganzas. I ask this in a good way. If somebody threatens to bring down the grid with their Christmas decorations, I make a point of going past their house before Halloween too because I want to know what sort of haunted house decorations they've put up. I ask myself "what will they do next?" for Easter (they hung easter eggs from the shrubbery-excellent!) and the 4th of July (red, white and blue pinwheels). Some people see such memorability as a virtue, not a vice.

Zoe, no matter if you SAH or WOTH, you NEVER have time off, unless you have a support system. It just doesn't work that way.

Unless you have a dh that is worth more than a poke and a paycheck where you can leave the kids with him and do something you want to do on your own.

Yogabba, the color of people's doors should be the last thing that you worry about.

If that is the part you like, there are other ideologies that might do you.

Oh I dunno -- my dad grew up in the Italian section of new Haven and I saw some pretty colorful houses in those neighborhoods!

Yes. We. Did.

Ahhh. So the real problem you have is not with the color yellow as I'd previously thought. The real problem you have is with anyone bringing attention to their property. Notice I didn't say "uneccessary" attention because many, many people do not agree that having people stop and look twice at their home is a bad thing. There is a whole industry of homefront and lawn decorations that are made for the express purpose of letting people showcase their individuality and make people pay attention to their home. What you see as a negative is seen as a positive by lots of people.
