And your dh made enough $$ to support both of you comfortably, do you think you would be working?

Mine are going to day camp. But they do enjoy it. If they asked for sleep away camp I would consider it.

Actually some of my relatives and friends do not have long term vested interest in my kids. Your general assumption isn't true.

ROFLOL...what a pile of hyperbole! could you just pile it ANY higher??? however, i'll make just a few succint rebuttals...

1. thanks for the kudos. within a few days ALL of our caregivers were/are "close friends" who have a vested interest in doing a great job of caretaking....OR are you implying that dcp can't have a "vested interest" in giving great care to each and every child that they are charged with caring for?

2. why not just dispense of the label entirely and call it what it is? PARENTING. NOTHING more, NOTHING less. In fact, my kids today practiced the fine art of peer interaction, practiced their eye-hand coordination, worked on their time management skills, employed their listening skills, used the proper terms of respect for their friends' parents -- In other words -- they were playing at their friends' homes.

3. << In fact, it's very similar to camp, except year round.>> then WHY all the darn fuss on the other board about my dd's camp experiences for 2 weeks during the summer??? i see. it's okay for you to run your daughter's educational experience "all day, every day", but not okay for anyone to send their child to camp for some of the same things. that's some double-standard you've got there.

OMG! it's SO amazing. I have DUAL primary purposes....being a MOM and bringing home a paycheck...it must go together with the 330% I give my kids...

Have you checked the price of sleep away camp? You could bring the entire family on a grand tour of Europe for less.

I'm back home again in Indiana (know the song?) but we were in NYC a few weeks ago. I had never visited the Natural History Museum before and was *really* impressed. What an incredible place.

What does it cost? It's pretty common around here but I never bothered to check the prices.

My kids are not really interested in sleep away camp. My oldest is 10 years old and his football season starts on July 12. A football player who is hoping to be a starter can't be gone from home for weeks or months and my ds would definitely not want to give up football to go to sleep away camp. So for him it is a moot point. My middle son is just turning 8 next month and my youngest is only 5. Both are to immature for sleep away camp.

You're just irreparably biased.

It is, but it's so big and there's so much to see that you really get shell shocked after a while. I finally wised up and bought a family membership, which costs about the same as two visits, so that we can pop in on rainy weekends.

9 yo dd is taking a 3 day class there later this month about primates. I wanna go!

This is for a New England camp, so prices will vary elsewhere. The camp my 9 yo's best friend goes to was $7500 for the "full" summer (which is 7 weeks) PLUS the packing list, which would cost at least another $1500. This is a nice but entirely normal camp. Nothing fancy.

A half season, which is a day or so more than 3 weeks, was $4500, with the same packing list, or about $2000/week.

I've got 2 kids. Not happening. I did give some thought to the idea of sending her to camp in Canada because (at the time) the dollar was strong, but I couldn't find another family who would do it also.
