And your dh made enough $$ to support both of you comfortably, do you think you would be working?

"Ummm, dd didn't have any experience with bottles either. She managed to get water out of a sippy cup. Guess your dd just wasn't as orally coordinated as mine."

Perhaps so.

"I didn't. And, there are many cups out there that are not "sippy" cups, instead are cups with a lid and a drinking spout. No magic. Spillable, but not nearly as spillable as a lidless one."

Absolutely, my dd did use those non-sippy cups on occasion as well. But, she didn't like the ones that were spill proof.

"Its a question of a 7mo not having the manual dexterity to drink from a regular cup without spilling."

Actually, it's really not that difficult, especially if you don't put a lot of liquid in the cup, that way if spilling does occur, it's just a small amount. My dd learned about cause and effect rather quickly. If I turn this cup over, it's going to spill and such. Hmm, that's a novel idea now isn't it?

IMO, parents really aren't doing their children any favors by giving them sippy cups, maybe for the first year or so, but beyond that no. I see no real reason why kids should use cups that are spillproof for an extended amount of time. I mean what's the worst that can happen? Oh no, they might spill. What's the big deal? The earlier you give them an *opportunity* to use a regular cup, the earlier they will be able to learn how to *use* a regular cup. Hmm, Guess your dd just wasn't as manually coordinated as mine.

"Gee, what if she was thirsty between those times? I let my children have a drink when they express thirst. I don't prefer they get dehydrated just so they following strict rules of cups only at snack and mealtime. And I was able to do that without them carrying a sippy cup around all day. Imagine that!"

Well what do you think she did if she got thirsty LOl? Obviously, she would ask for a drink. I would then get it for her and she would drink it at the table. In other words, she only drank from a cup at the table. She did not carry it around all day.

"My kids never carried a bottle or sippy cup around all day. My 2.5 year old still uses a sippy cup occasionally. Don't worry, his teeth and jaw are just fine."

How do you know, especially if they were in dc or with the nanny anywhere from 50-60+ hours a week?

For you, maybe it's not a big deal.

Do you think as little of adults who have a drink of some sort with them (in a glass, cup or bottle) all or most of the day as you think of children who have a sippy cup with them throughout the day?

I understand the 'house rule' of having your daughter only drink at the table, but do you observe the same rule?

Don't be sorry. It wasn't a bad thing. I enjoyed your comment that there isn't a lot of traffic down there--I was laughing at the turn of phrase and your openness about it.

I remember very fondly my first Harold Robbins novel I read in about tenth grade. I could have said Danielle Steele but I wanted something with more edge because we were talking about pubic hair, right?

Maybe it didn't come off that way, but it was a compliment.

I don't know...I could fathom what someone WOULD put in a cup for a 5 month old, that's why I asked.

Just curious if this is true of ALL rules in your house, or just this one.
