I saw a little bit about this this morning, and immediately thought of this board.

i'm not familiar enough wtih credit cards to know what kick backs are out there, cool for you in spending the time to seek that out i guess..i will say a student loan is better than any credit card debt, general and i've already said why!

As posted above, I get a 40% discount on medical treatment if I pay with my credit card (because the bank and the hospital are owned by the same company).

my brother's second wedding was simpler than his first but just as nice. the whole event was hosted at his place, food and cocktails after the ceremony, etc...i don't think anyone agrees that you have to go into debt to have a nice wedding.

i don't know what your modest means, but 21 is even too young to access a lump fund in the neighborhood i'm thinking of.

DS had oral surgery last spring, the doctor's plan wtih the insurance was different than other medical experiences, we paid for the total bill up front then the doctor's office files the claim for which we get refunded an amount of what we paid up front later, about 4 months later, we received a generous check. what's nice is when you get these kinds of things in the mail that you're not waiting for or expecting esp in large sums like that. it's not like we were on pins and needles waiting because we owed a credit card!

the government is involved in just about every corner of our lives. what i borrow or get in tax advantages is NOT in the same category as people in the welfare system or the person you know who gives up on a house through short sale.

i'm all about responsible government and responsible citizenship.

Got it, but even if the interest is not subsidized, the government is presumably guaranteeing the loans and running the bureaucracy etc. IOW, if the loan has government involvement, there is some kind of cost to the government.

It was only about 20,000 dollars. Eventually it grew to about twice that, thanks to a small inheritance and some decent stock buys. I don't see why it was too early. In fact, I really wish I had been given the money at 18, because that way I would have been able to go straight to college after HS, instead of having to wait.

Uhm, we are not on pins and needles either. We pay the credit card bill normally when it is due, whether the insurance has paid us yet or not. We have the cash available. However, by paying with the card, we save 40%. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Besides, nobody uses checks here, so if we don't pay by card, we would need to walk around with several 1000s in cash, which is not all that advisable.
