OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Maybe you've hit on the reason it seems odd to me ... I've never put myself on a strict budget for groceries.

Yeah - I don't have a strict budget but I have a 'range" I try to stay in and I will mentall calculate and put things back etc...so I don't go over.... groceries are killin me!
If you can't be a good example, at least be a hideous warning.

I don't LIKE to be strict, but I know myself pretty well.

When we go on vacation, we take our grocery money for that week and put it with the rest of our spending money as it will not be needed at home.
Even though we won't be eating dinner at home on Christmas, I still bought even meat and things to make dinner for at least 7 days.

You never had a budget for food, ever?

I never did either, truth be told, and still don't. When I was broke, the budget was whatever was left in my pocket at the end of the day.

I do keep track of hat I spend (everything goes into Quicken), but that is not quite the same thing.

Nope. Not as in "this is the limit. You can't spend more than $X."

There have been times, particularly in college, that I've taken $20 to the store, or $10 or $40 or whateverk, and spent only that .. but those have been specific to a shopping trip, or for very short time frames.
