OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Impressive, but only goes to show how much location matters. It is hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of 100 bucks a week per kid for childcare and a place to live for a family of 4 that can be paid with a 100K mortgage.

It's not that way everywhere, though. I made approx. $65-70K when I got divorced -- to support a family of 4. Child support was not consistent. Mortgage was $1500 per month, childcare (nanny) was almost $2000 per month. There's just not alot left over when you bring home about $4400 per month (after taxes).

<< So this is a hypothetical family and not your expenses? >>

Yes.

Yes. A hypothetical family in my area.

<>

Because it's hypothetical and it's my area.

I don't know what everyone spends either. But I do know roughly what things cost.

my mortgate is $1010
condo fees $220
car is $266 (almost done with that!!!)
afterschool is about $240 a month
groceries about $400 a month give or take
utilities (phone electric heat) about $270-$300 a month depending on the season
insurance (car and condo) is about $120 a month
disability and life insurance about $400 a year
yeah.. not much left over! LOL

then there are the things I split with her dad -- dance is $102 a month, clarinet rental, acting producation fees ($100 per show - this is her fourth show since July) -- clothes, soccer gear etc...

I was thinking my hypothetical family had young children, but there are people who live to see how little they can spend on groceries while preparing healthy meals or who do it out of necessity.

A woman on another message board I read just wrote up a healthy menu (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for a family 6, kids ages 4-10, for $50/wk. It takes a fair amount of effort. I think she lives in an area with a COL similar to where I am.

Vegetarian meals using eggs and/or beans have good protein, but are cheap to make. We eat vegetarian meals several times a week, even though we aren't vegetarian.

No. I figured it out myself. I know how much housing and utilities cost. The university where I work is one of the biggest employers here, and I know their benefit system. I know the range of childcare costs, groceries, etc.

I guess you are speaking only of YOUR expenses. These amounts are VERY low for my area and I am sure others.

I guess you missed the part where she suggested that a family of 4 IN HER AREA could live on 40k a year.

On top of this we have car insurance and maintenance, life insurance, cellphones, medicine, medical, clothes, activities, home expenses, credit card bill, savings.

I guess you also missed where she addressed most of these in her *sample* budget.

Health Insurance- $82/mo.
Retirement- $233/mo. + $233/mo. matching = $466/mo. total
Life Insurance and Long Term Disability- $20/mo.

College Savings- $300/mo.
.........
Misc.- $163/ mo.
