OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

a place to live for a family of 4 that can be paid with a 100K mortgage.

Not long after dh and I moved to this area, we were talking with another couple about owning a home (we were all in the market and looking).

When we lived in IL, we rented a decent 2 bedroom apartment for $550/mo. Here, the house (2 bedrooms) we rented until we bought this place (4 bedrooms) was only $100/mo. less than our current mortgage.

I don't doubt that at all. In Oklahoma I had a 2-bedroom duplex for $450 a month. But I don't live there anymore, and I would not be able to easily raise a family of 4 on $40k per year. A mortgage may be cheaper per month, but we are not in a position to be approved for a home loan.

I am HOURS late on this, but I couldn't not respond to this one. Probably water over the dam by now, but nonetheless...

Our children each receive 3 gifts every Christmas because baby Jesus received 3 gifts from the Magi. And because Christmas is celebrated to remind everyone of the complete grace of God in giving himself/his son to the world.

And I am quite well-off, highly paid, highly educated, and aggressively saving towards retirement and college for my children.

Wherever you've decided that you have great, sweeping insights into the moral and spiritual values of all working parents who value education and savings, think again. If you think perhaps there is some special extra bonus points in heaven if you're poor (or better yet, somehow embrace the notion of being poor as a values-lesson to give your daughter) than you've missed the important part about the religion you're referencing that is about the **grace of God**.

Good parenting and bad parenting are not determined by wealth, income, or SAH vs WOH. But it *is* determined by what priorities you place for your family and your child's future. Your daughter is 3 months old (I assume she is actually not speaking English or German, BTW, but good for her to someday be bilingual). So far you've told us that your priorities are to ensure she doesn't get much in the way of material goods and that hopefully she will learn the value of an education through the experience of either dropping out or incurring massive debt.

Perhaps another year or two under your belt in the parenting arena will solidify some other priorities.

Where did you get these figures from?

So you don't really know how much people's expenses are in your area? Didn't you just buy a home around $100,000? Are all homes that cheap? Aren't there larger homes that the electric, gas would be more than what you quoted?

I can't figure out how she can know this unless she is giving quoting how much she makes and her expenses. I can say I can live on such and such because these are my bills in my "area" but I don't know how much more a larger home would cost. I don't know if someone else in my area has student loans, credit cards, loans, medical bills. I don't know how much their taxes cost.

My gf rents a 3 bedroom home-$1,800 month

A friend of mine is looking at homes. Average size 3-4 bedroom home will cost him $3,000-$4,000 month in mortgage, taxes and homeowners insurance.

I couldn't say that these 2 people could both make the same amount of money because they live in the same "area".
