OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Which ones?
I can look up the prices of houses. The benefits information is available online. The utility rates are the same as mine. The grocery and child care information is stuff I happen to know because I live here.
What? Yes, there are lots of homes that would cost more to heat, etc. But I know how many square feet a house costing $100K is likely to be. I know the utility rates. It's not too hard to figure out about how much the utilities would be for a house that is around $100K if you know those two things.
There are houses over a million dollars around here, too. That's completely irrelevant.
What part of hypothetical don't you understand?
Here are some samples of "lower" priced housing on LI. As you can see, you don't get much:

That is sooo not true. My neighbor has the same size house and her utilities bills were always higher. Why? Because they left all their lights on all the time. Because they used their AC more than we did. My sister's house is not much bigger than mine but her electric bill can go as much as 6x mine some months. Why? Because she has a pool, she has more lights inside and outside of her home.

Good grief!
It's a hypopthetical situation, where a family COULD live off of 40k in her area.
