OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Yes. That's what I've been saying all along. A LOT of people in my area live on this amount give or take, including several coworkers.

I explained where I got the numbers-- the health insurance is the exact premium two people making $20K working at the university would make-- I looked it up. The retirement amount is exactly 7% of 40K, which is the amount the university requires its employees to contribute to retirement each month. Misc-- is just the amount left over.

Because that's the definition of a hypothetical situation? I didn't just pull numbers out of the air . . .

I do not do well with hypothetical budgets because you are assuming that someone making this amount of money could live like you have stated.

You are taking a number that someone else stated and breaking it down to how YOU think someone would spend their money and assuming that they COULD do that.

I just don't see the point of doing that when there are so many variables and so many things that were left out of that budget. It makes it seem not real enough for anyone.

You really did because you assumed that someone's mortgage/taxes/homeowners was $600/month. How did you do that?

Yes, that's clear.

So who takes care of your computers? No one can monitor your internet usage?

Exactly...If the circumstances are right someone COULD do that, or at least come close to it.

A 30 year $100K mortgage plus property taxes and insurance with a good interest rate would be about $600/mo. around here. That's not out of thin air.

Because they are not real and I like to work with reality. Things that I know WOULD work for most people not the couple you know at your job.
