OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Are you saying that it is impossible for any family of 4 anywhere in the entire United States of America to live on $40k? Are you saying it is not possible for such a family to exist?
I have a set budget and work with that. Any raises that I or my dh gets goes to any bills that go up as much as possible so we don't have to change our budget as bills don't usually go down (if they do it is a few dollars that I will put into my savings or into another bill that goes up).
I never said that. I said that making up a hypothetical budget that left out alot of things does not say that someone who makes $40,000 in her area can do that. I personally can not see how someone could live on this budget and have children but maybe it's me.

Then you acknowledge that it IS hypothetically possible for SOMEONE in her area to live on that income SOMEHOW.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in 2004 was $44, 334. So apparently quite a few people live on a $40,000 budget, and I don't think they're all childless.
