OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

You never adjust your budget to help you decide if you can afford something? Make a *hypothetical* budget-- For example, say you want to buy a new car, but you aren't sure if you can afford it or not. So you move a little from the savings category to the new car category and a little from the car repair category on paper first to see if you can swing the car payment? Because that's a hypothetical budget.

That is stealing from Peter to pay Paul if we decided that would work on paper. Taking from another set amount.

Wait. So basically, you're saying none of your budget lines ever decrease? Like childcare or activities or clothing or entertainment?

Correct. For the same year, 12.7% fell below the poverty line. Since the median means that 50% of the population falls above or below the $44k salary mark, this leaves 37.4% of the population.

When you knew your son was going to be starting kindergarten, didn't you sit down way beforehand and figure out where the additional money that you would have by not paying daycare would be going in your budget?

You mean like I really, really thought that you were a sahm taking care of her child???

---She was down for a nap, her naps last about an hour. I had to get off because she woke up. Baby awake can't play on the internet.

I don't practice religion, I don't go to church, and I choose not to talk about it if I can.

She won't be going to college in the US, therefore she won't be incurring massive debt. My DH managed to finish with a degree, with no help from family at all and not incurring 1€ of debt....amazing.

I do get it and realize that you can NOT say someone could live on such and such amount of money. How do you find this true? Not sure if everybody pays the same amount in every single house in your area but I know for sure my next door neighbor pays more in taxes than me and they have the same size house (land a little larger). Even if they paid the same amount for their house, which they did not, I can not assume that their utility bills are the same as myself and that they could live on the same salary as myself.

Its possible to live off such a small amount, though minus the house. My Mother made $16,000 a year up till the day I graduated from HS in '99....It is possible, again minus the house and renting instead.

I don't feel bad and I don't have to justify anything that I do with my life. If I want to work I can, I rather stay home with my child.

Yes, it still takes me aback how much this varies by location. On a lark I checked what 100K will buy where we used to live-pretty much a studio or 1BR co-op in a town considered seedy. That is with prices already having come down some.
