OK, remember this is a debate board, and I am going to play devil's advocate here, so please let's play nice.

Well, I already posted a $40k budget that included all of the categories she seemed to want, and she ignored it. But I would LOVE to see her come up with a hypothetical budget when she doesn't understand what hypothetical means. :-)

I've been following this thread for all 700-something threads and I have to say you are absolutely correct that it is feasible.

I live in Western PA and work for a university as well and make a slightly more than $40K, however, I save for both college and retirement each month and have the expenses listed in your budget, plus I'm paying on student loans as well. While the amounts vary for the particular expenses, it is absolutely feasible to live on that and save each month.

What is so hard for RLGL to grasp about that? Sheesh.

Here's an example of the kind of thing I looked at: http://www.ohr.psu.edu/Benefits/HealthPlan.htm or http://hr.osu.edu/benefits/rates/Rates-Regular.pdf At my university, it's a bit more complicated because the premium rates are based on salary and these are the same for everyone regardless of salary.

Well, then don't bother. However, this is not worth pages after pages of posts, IMHO. The rest of us got GG's point. You thought her budget was wrong/mistaken/whatever. We get it.

"--you are assuming this family would be willing to shop at a thrift store or could even get everything they need there. "

Um, I don't think that most people who are on a budget except to shop at top of the line stores all the time.

Why is this so difficult for you to grasp? I mean, seriously? You want a real life example of how this could possibly work? Hi! I'm it. *eyeroll*

You don't need to. Look up the average salary, average rent/mortgage, etc for your area, guesstimate other things based on your own experience, trim the fat in any way that could be conceived as within the realm of physical possiblity, and voila. HYPOTHETICAL budget.

Yes. Because she wanted to know whether college or retirement savings would be possible here for a family making $40K. Considering that was one of my first few posts on the subject and we're now 300+ past that point, I think using the word "beginning" is appropriate.

"Not true. How do you know that they have ever size for your entire family?"

LOL. Have you ever been to a thrift store?

Either she is just pretending to not understand in order to get her jollies, or she has absolutely NO abstract reasoning skills. I don't know which would be more sad.
