I've noticed this, too. I wonder if it's because there are fewer middle income families now or if there just aren't that many in this region.
I think it's because those on either end have a defined reason for being a SAHM:
I think that is because the middle is where an additional income can make the most difference in SOL.
A family already at the higher income bracket will not see much difference in SOL with more income.
A family at the lower income brackets will not much difference in SOL if that income is barely enough to cover the expenses of that income (child care etc).
For those in the middle an additional income can make a huge difference in SOL.

I agree that responsible people try to find work when they need to, but managers at Walmart
