Dh and I went to an Indian place for dinner last night. (GREAT!)

As we were about done with our dinner, a lady with her 5 kids, ages about 14 to 6,

I never guess kid's ages for that reason. It's the equivalent of asking someone who isn't pregnant when she is due.

If only everyone else realized the same thing. The common response after ds says he is 5, is to look at me with a shocked look on their face and say "He's five? He's so small!"

Annoying and frustrating.

Even if your children understand and accept the answer, it doesn't mean that they won't feel embarrassment.

UUUGGGHHHH! People really need to treat children with more respect. I would have to bite my tongue in that situation for sure.

That stinks. I've been lucky with ds so far that despite his size, he has never gotten teased and no one has ever made comments to him that make him feel self-conscious....yet. People actually tell me that they think he is older than he is b/c he's mature for his age, and is very coordinated (he's been riding a two wheeler w/o training wheels since he was 3.5 y/o). I'm hoping that he will hit a growth spurt b/c I do worry that he might get teased later on, but it just hasn't happened yet. He'll be 5 in two months. Yikes, did I just say that? What happened to my little boy???? I don't think it hit me that he'll be 5 y/o so soon!

FWIW, my father is only about 5'5" and his size has never been an issue for him (he does not have the Napolean complex so many small guys have). I'm just hoping that if for some reason , ds ends up being that small as an adult, that he has enough confidence and self-esteem that it isn't an issue for him either.

Just curious (I probably missed this) but how tall is/how much does Cal weight? Where does he fit on the percentile chart? Dominic is less than 40 lbs, but I'm not sure how tall. His last checkup, he was only in the tenth percentile for height and weight though.

I've never said they wouldn't. And at age 6, it's not like she has never suffered embarrassment before. It is not something she has ever dwelled on.

Cal may soon figure out how to use that to his advantage. Ds had a really good thing going in the first couple of years at school when he would just stand there and look helpless and get teachers to do stuff for him they would refuse to do for other kids (like peeling an orange). His actual teacher figured him out really fast and would just stare back and say "I KNOW you can do it", but it took a while for the others to catch on. One look at this tiny little kid with big puppy-dog eyes and they just couldn't say no.

Please cite any post in which I or anyone else here stated or suggested that kids not ride in carseats if they need them.

"I'm surprised that private cars are used for field trips in this day and age."

Our preschool still uses private cars.
