Dh and I went to an Indian place for dinner last night. (GREAT!)

As we were about done with our dinner, a lady with her 5 kids, ages about 14 to 6,

It's also an issue when they're big for their age. DS2 just turned 11. He's 5'3" and about 130 lbs. He's pretty big for his age. When kids are big for their age, people expect them to act older. That can be hard on a kid, too.

There's a boy in my younger son's grade who is like that. He is a small kid whose personality more than makes up for his size. He is the funniest kid, too. His mom always says he's going to be a talk-show host or comedian or something like that, and I bet he does.

When I guess ages of kids, I always guess something outrageous...like, "I'll bet you're 14!" when they are clearly MUCH younger.

That sounds like Dominic. He actually is finally wearing Levis in a 4 slim b/c the 3Ts were too short just by a smidgeon (and I certainly don't want him to suffer the *embarrassment* of high waters ). We were astonished this fall when he was among the tallest on his soccer team but then after talking to some of the parents, we realized that their kids had only recently turned four while Dominic turned four last January. Gives me some relief b/c he will be on the older side of his class when he starts kindergarten, so a little more time to grow. In his preschool class, he is among the smaller boys, but not by too much! And like Callahan, Dominic's personality and maturity seem to make up for his small stature so far b/c he has honestly never been teased nor has he ever been made to feel like he was small (by strangers who might say things like they did to Cal, though I'm certain it will happen some day!).

I keep hoping that Callahan will some day skip about 3 sizes because of a huge growth spurt.

When ds was a toddler, he was taking tumbling and the owner told us that he was the most coordinated boy that had ever come through her gym. I honestly think that much of that is related to his size. He was walking at 9 months (when he was only about 17 lbs) and has never stopped. He is an excellent soccer and baseball player - I don't like to say that b/c I feel like I am bragging, but people comment all the time to us about what a great athlete he is. Thankfully he is not interested in basketball or football. I'm not sure he would excel in those sports LOL.

Dd will be 7 in January. She just hit 38 lbs. My kids have never gotten above the 3rd percentile in height and they are off the bottom of the weight for age charts (right on track in the weight for height charts, which is what I pay a lot more attention to).

He's oblivious, but yeah, I think it's a little embarrassing. Luckily, he could care less.

It happens overnight. I looked at a picture of my sons last night. This picture was taken a year ago when we were in California on vacation. They both grew at least 3 inches in the past year and my 13yo is closing in on me (I am 5'8). My younger one will be as well. I bet by the time he is 12 he'll be close to 5'7 (he's 5'4 now and growing).
It's scary, but exciting to watch. You'll see.

Yes, basketball and football are those where size does matter although in basketball if a kid is scrappy enough they can make a good guard where height doens't matter. My son before he had his growth spurt would make dives on the basketball court to save that ball. He could run and was fast. Some of the taller kids couldn't (and still can't run to save their lives).
