Just what is a SAHM?

I was taking a class recently from a well known designer--she is on the design team for a couple of companies, she teaches classes, writes articles, and sells her own creations from time to time online.

She started her introduction by saying "I'm a stay at home mom who also....." and then went on to describe what she does professionally.

No being a wohm just means that you work in addition to being a mom. I am currently a wohm. I was a sahm for 8 years until my children were both in school. I returned back to work the same time my youngest dd went to kindy. That wasn't really the plan for my dh & I but coincidently it did work out that way. My kids were never in dc and they still aren't even though I work 35 hours a week. There are tons of other moms that have various dc arrangements, some use family, friends, some use paid daycare (and many of them who do, are not in dc for the full 40 hours--because dc hours are offset by various schedules of the parents) some parents wah. The terms professional or full time does not describe a parental relationship in any way. It might make you feel good, you are a new mommy with 1 baby it appears, and a new sahm (relatively speaking). So it might mean you are listening to Dr. Laura and patting yourself on the back that you are such a great full time mom and put your child first and don't worry about the evil money. But really it is demeaning to btdt moms, whether they sah or woh to describe yourself with terms that try to elevate yourself over the rest of the moms in the world. I don't think you are doing it in a malicious way (like many militant sahms who come to post here) but it really is demeaning for you to say you have a one year old baby and you are a full time mom and elevate yourself over moms who have been parenting (not in just their off work hours) for 5, 10, 15, 20 years, etc.

This weekend Liza and I were watching that movie "13 going on 30' which she loves and the soundtrack was a veritable greatest hits of my junior high and high school years --w ell that Billy Joel Song "Vienna" is in the movie and I literally wore the grooves out on my "Stranger" album in 1979 playing that song so I started SINGING ALONG at the top of my lungs.

caps convey shouting and excitement as posters are routinely asked not to "shout" by using all caps.
