Just what is a SAHM?

I was taking a class recently from a well known designer--she is on the design team for a couple of companies, she teaches classes, writes articles, and sells her own creations from time to time online.

She started her introduction by saying "I'm a stay at home mom who also....." and then went on to describe what she does professionally.

I hang out at her voice classes and dance classes too b/c it's not worth driving home -- and I actually have come to treasure that quiet time -- I do cross word puzzles, listen to my ipod and sometimes fall asleep ;-) If I were home Id feel like I had to put laundry away or something !

My daughter is 18 months. I work full time, but I haven't been away from Samantha overnight yet. I'm also not really comfortable having anyone but my mom and MIL babysit. We all have different comfort levels. My mom was very overprotective(?-not sure that's the best word), and I turned out fine. Don't worry about it.

Not feeling comfortable leaving your baby doesn't necessarily relate at all to expecting that they will remember that you left them, or that they'll be traumatized by it in any lasting way.

The definition of a term like SAHM though is a lot less straightforward than something like "I could care less." It's socially defined. But if you'd like to present some evidence that "a parent without a paying job" is the one true definition of SAHP, I'd be happy to consider it.
