Kids as an "excuse" to stay home

No one would likely ever admit to this...but what percentage of women who stay at home, and have no plans to ever return to the work force, or to do more than work PT...stay home because of the kids, but also for the major fact that they simply don't want to work?

I don't love my job every second, and there's definitely jobs out there that I don't think I could get out of bed for every day. But the idea of never working again, and being completely dependent on my spouse...kind of blows my mind. I realize not everyone's of the same ilk, and one's not better than the other.

I do wonder how many of the women who go on and on about how great it is to be home with the kids, are primarily just relieved to not have to punch the clock every day in addition to being mom.

She is not a newbie. She has come around before. She likes stirring things up.

My goodness, aren't we a tad crabby?

It's not that you misspelled something.

I support many of the SAHMs in their debates here.

Why would having a special needs child be humiliating, if known?

It is relevant. Travsmom has more work to do at home with her three children than you do with your three, specifically because one of hers is special needs.

My "valid reason" for not staying home with my children is that I don't want to do so.

"All in all once finances are out of the way, IME, the most important factor is the flexibility of the woh jobs and if one or both have to travel frequently."

I realize you stated this, in your experience, but IME the most important factor is the parents' personalities, after the money question.

I'm on my 3rd job, BUT two of them have been for the same school district. I worked in the district that I'm in now when I first came out of college as a science/math aide (think glorified secretary/tutor). I did that for two years. They didn't have a job for me after that, so I went and did my actual first year of teaching in one of the big cities in Bridgeport. After that school year, I got married and wasn't going to look for a job. I got a call the 2nd week of August from my previous department head -- telling me that if I wanted a job, they had one for me. I started there in 1990 and have been there since then.
