Kids as an "excuse" to stay home

No one would likely ever admit to this...but what percentage of women who stay at home, and have no plans to ever return to the work force, or to do more than work PT...stay home because of the kids, but also for the major fact that they simply don't want to work?

I don't love my job every second, and there's definitely jobs out there that I don't think I could get out of bed for every day. But the idea of never working again, and being completely dependent on my spouse...kind of blows my mind. I realize not everyone's of the same ilk, and one's not better than the other.

I do wonder how many of the women who go on and on about how great it is to be home with the kids, are primarily just relieved to not have to punch the clock every day in addition to being mom.

There is also an argument because people are willing to call women who don't work outside the home when the family doesn't need the income "leeches."

"there are some pretty extreme positions to counter."

Yes, that was pretty much my point.

Yeah, I'm extreme in why I like to WOH, but there are some pretty extreme positions to counter.

It also seems, that while there ARE some extremes in woh, that there is *more* extreme views from sahms.

Whether or not the family "needs" the income is irrelevant.

I have to wonder, what does such a person do with their time?

Never mind the fact that they are probably doing the shopping, the cleaning, the cooking, possibly handling the family financial records.

An adult who sits on the couch all day eating bon bons and watching soaps, while leaving the other partner to not only work, but also care for the house, sure...that would be a leech. A housewife? Not so much.

Not enough to avoid the leech label in my book.

Why would a person who didn't need the money and had no burning desire to have a job suddenly become less of a leech if he or she went to work for pay? I'm a leech on society if my husband and I have enough income I don't have to work, but if I get a job greeting at WalMart I am all of a sudden a person of value????
