Kids home alone: diff between SAH/WOH?

I was talking with a friend who is a FT WOHM. She said she was really dismayed that there isn't much after school child care available for middle school kids (MS here is grades 6-8) and that the school seemed to expect the kids to come home and be alone for a few hours after school.

Edited to add: why would a SAHM be so time committed that she would be gone for 2 or 3 hours each weekday afternoon? Unless SAHM = not doing paid work nor watching your kids.

My son is almost 13 and he just started staying home alone this year. He will also watch his younger brother or sister (Not Mady, she is too much for him) for no more then 1 hour.

Sometimes it's because the work runs over on the early release days. For example, my son is home alone for 20-30 minutes on early release Wednesdays because
My mom didn't leave me at home after school until I was 13, but I think I would have been okay at home by myself a little younger than that. She was a teacher, and usually got home an hour or so after I did.
My neighbors started leaving their 8 or 9 yo DD at home after school and for early dismissals for hours (probably about 3-5+ hours). Although the DD was pretty mature, it was much to young for her to be left alone. The little girl flipped out one day when she came home to a lock that was iced shut. Thank God for good neighbors who let her hang out until her parents made it home.
I see pretty much no correlation between parents' comfort levels with leaving their kids at home and work status.
My dd1 goes to middle school next year, and she won't be home by herself after school.

"Why would a SAHM be volunteering after school hours? If I volunteer it is always when my kids are at school. Why would a SAHM choose to leave her kids alone to volunteer? It just seems odd to me."
There are many places to volunteer besides the school. I volunteer at a local non=profit that provides food and financial aid to families in crisis. While I have generally delivered food to people during school hours- sometimes it is not possible. We have financial training in programs that run at night too.
