How did your household income/potential income influence the number of children in your family? Did you and dh stop at a certain number of kids because you wanted to be able to provide certain things for each child?

We have just two partly because we adopted them, and the second adoption was kind of expensive. But the main reason was that we just didn't think we had the patience and the focus it would take to raise more than two the way we wanted to raise them.

Dh and I ran into former neighbors over the weekend. They have three children and another on the way. They don't own their home, have two unreliable cars, and don't seem to know where the new baby is going to sleep, lol. If I were in their shoes I would not be able to sleep at night! Dh and I have two kids, and to be honest, we only have two because we can only afford two. I would not feel like a good parent if my kids could not participate in a few extra activities, have their own beds to sleep in, have an account to help them with college, etc.

The saying is at our house is that dh and I got to plan the girls and God planned Dylan. Dylan started out sleeping in our bedroom because there was no place else for him to sleep in a 3-bedroom apt. Having all 3 girls share a room was out of the question, given their personalities and ages at the time. Having Joy and Erica in the same room would not be pretty. It was barely tollerable when they were little. It would have been impossible when they were 17 and 20.

No, decided based on replacment and not increasing the population base. Plus, I only have two arms.

i always wanted three kids. Financially, we've been able to make it work. Our finances now are really driven by needing nanny-care for my middle dd (special needs).

I think I would have had 2 children regardless of our financial situation, but we added a third when we figured that we could do everything we want to do with three children- pay for their educations, travel, live in the community we like, etc. We still occasionally discuss a 4th child (unlikely!), and it is definitely a financial decision in a way that children 1 & 2 were not. I wouldn't have another child if that meant not doing what I want to do for my existing children.

Our income did not have much to do with the number of children we have. We talked about three children when we got married and have three children. It did have a bit to do with the timing of our children, we waited until DH was at a certain rank in the Air Force before we had our third.

From a pure financcial standpoint having 1-2 children would make more sense but not every decision is made for purely fincncial reasons.

It had more to do with logistics than income.

I pretty much knew I always wanted one child and hoped it would be a girl. I got the girl and said "done!" it was mostly b/c I knew that I just didn't have the temperament to go through infancy and todderhood again....

We knew we both wanted to keep WOH after kids, and didn't think we could handle three children plus two full time jobs in the way we wanted to parent.
