How did your household income/potential income influence the number of children in your family? Did you and dh stop at a certain number of kids because you wanted to be able to provide certain things for each child?

I'll give you an example. The new school in our district is built in "pods". Each grade has it's own pod, with a central room that has a kitchen, a whole bunch of tables, a projection screen, etc etc... and then the all the classrooms surround the pod. You can see into each classroom from the center room.

Did you not say that your dh made very good investments in the past and that is why you are both able to not work? "

My DH did very well with others money:) He was a derivatives/quant trader, then ran an offshore hedge fund for years. His success was also hard won, it wasnt due to *charm* or I*luck.* And even if we took his side out of the equation, I worked my way to a very succesful and lucrative career.

I work full time. Very full time. But I do so at this stage because I choose to. Yes we could both not work anymore, but it was hard earned. We didnt win the lottery, we didnt just put money into some great stock, we didnt inherit it.

Pka was proving her point that dance can be expensive. I haven't missed any of the thread, where it continues to go right over your head, that some activities, including dance, can cost more than $185 per week.

So your parents still support your sister. Do you think(honestly) that she has been used to be supported and having someone rescue her financially her whole life which has contributed to her current inability to support herself?"

Um no. She's had a very rough time. Came very very close to dying a few years ago so no, it isnt because she was financially rescued. As last time I checked that didnt kill you.
She's still in rocky shape, and, is a single mother. So my parents support her. I would too if I had a child, of any age, in her situation and I could afford to do so.

I totally agree with you and the advice you gave your friend. I've talked about this with my DH, and we both strongly believe that its about teaching values. My DH worked his way through school -- I didnt. And are *both* really frugal, both "self made," and self sufficient. I always have been, and as long as I have my health, I alwys will be.
I really believe it depends on the personality of the child, the parents, and the situation.
Which isnt to say I havent seen rich kids get spoiled. Oh my god have I ever! But I've also seen spoiled kids with no respect for hard work, etc, at the other end of the spectrum.

Well he does make good investments, generally given his background, but that's not where he *earned* the bulk of his money. You missunderstood. He earned it investing *other* people's -- or rather institutions -- money.

LOL...I am completely not in this conversation but that post made me laugh because when we moved to Calgary almost 5 years ago...we were moving to McKenzie Towne and they DO have a website and I couldn't believe it. When we visited with a realtor(my company flew me in for 4 days to find a home).....I completely thought it was "Pleasantville" and we joked that we would have to get a jogging stroller and we already had the Golden Retriever.

It reminded me of that movie with Chevy Chase when they paid the townspeople to mimic Norman Rockwell paintings...there were literally Christmas Carollers in the gazebo at the month after we moved in and we almost p'd our pants laughing.

Totally interjecting but the post brought it all back.
