Because more women now have had woh moms than my generation did. And they certainly have more dc options. Does that chart correct for population growth? That could account for part of the difference in numbers. As could be the ratio between female and male population.

I think the census currently reads more women are attending college now than men and getting just as good or better grades.
Because the cost of living has gone up a lot. Dual incomes are needed more just to make ends meet. For example our neighbor bought his house in the 70's for 60K. Now they are selling for 1 million - get the picture?
