Can we please voluntarily end this thread from grlimilakinskeeper, or whatever her screen name is...it's getting too personal, and not very productive.

Of course, that's only part of it. BUT, i'm too tired and it's too late to have YET ANOTHER go-round. suffice it to say that "no good deed goes unpunished" and I just should have stayed the heck away from any of these idiotic threads....

Here's a thought - your children are people in their own right, not little carbon copies of you. Just because you didn't find therapy useful doesn't mean they won't find it useful.

And psychiatry and counseling are two very different things.

How would they know, if you didn't tell them? Sounds to me like the psyciatrists weren't the problem.

At least you're consistent. Once again placing the blame on someone other than yourself.

thank G-d that I don't have that same kind of attitude. In fact, i even told andrew that he wasn't to refer to the psychologist as a "shrink" because it was a rude term to use. Even he understood that.

We've all been in therapy at various times -- marriage counseling, individual counseling, family therapy when alyssa was diagnosed, ADHD counseling for andrew, etc. we have great respect for mental health professionals and have no doubt that jenna would benefit greatly from having a neutral 3rd party to talk to.

i find your characterization so incredibly broad-brushed to be insulting and downright inflammatory.

i think this is one of YMMV...andrew loved talking with his "friend" (psychologist) once each week. he went from the time he was 5 to deal with a combination of ADHD issues, as well as working through his sister's diagnosis. It was PLAY therapy, quite appropriate and he LOVED going.

so that means it would be useless to your dds'???? talk about short-sighted!!! did it ever occur to you that you had the WRONG counselors for what you needed OR that you would CAREFULLY choose who your girls might talk to?

Thats a pretty sad attitude, but not surprising.

If they have a specific problem that needs to be dealt with, great. IMO, that's what psychiatrists are for. However, I have no faith in counselor's ability to determine what the problem is. It's a crap shoot whether or not a counselor will actually figure out what is bothering a child. I can probably do better myself. In fact, I have. Dss#1's first psychiatrist decided he was hyper and put him on Ritalin. It didn't take me a week to figure out that this child was not hyper and didn't belong on Ritalin. So I took him to my family doctor who agreed that he was not hyper.

Not either. It's realistic. Why spend money on a crap shoot your child may or may not need? If my kids have specific issues they're having trouble with, great. They'll go for those. I see no reason to sign up for a never ending string of sessions when it's a gamble as to whether or not the psychiatrist can even get to the real issues. I'm not that wealthy.

Would you send your child to the doctor for an hour every week because you know some day they will get sick and need the doctor? No. You send them when they have a problem. Sorry, but I don't trust a psychatrist to head off problems at the pass. I've see too many instances where they couldn't diagnose an issue after the fact to think they can head it off.

If my girls are having issues, they'll go. I see no need to ASSume things that are not there or to throw good money after bad. I've wasted enough money on psychiatrists. I get more out of using my best friend as a shounding board, lol.
