Can we please voluntarily end this thread from grlimilakinskeeper, or whatever her screen name is...it's getting too personal, and not very productive.

A psychiatrist deals with a completely different set of issues. MEDICAL issues mainly, dealing with actual problems with the BRAIN. Psychologists and therapists deal with EMOTIONAL issues. You really dont know what you are talking about. Yes, a psychiatrist is a doctor, but if a person is looking for therapy dealing with emotional issues, they are not the best to consult.

So my assessment was correct. You perceive needing help with emotional issues, admitting one needs help, as a sign of weakness.

And sounds like your experiences with counselors (and which was it, counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists? Do you even know?) is pretty limited and based on some pretty antiquated info. The field has grown tremendously over the years, with all the things we have learned.

Its really sad you see it that way. Counseling can be very very beneficial and I dont think there is a person out there who wouldnt learn something about themselves by utilizing it. Its certainly not a sign of weakness or a crutch, and its a shame you wont consider easing the transition for your children, whom you claim to be putting first here, by giving them that opportunity.

Again, if you compare a nurse practioner vs a doctor to a psychologist vs a psychiatrist, you really dont understand ANYTHING about the mental health field and what the differences are between them. They are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Its almost like comparing a lawyer to a doctor. Two different fields. Not even really similar if you look at what they study.

Therapists are doctors if they hold PhDs. . .they just aren't M.D.s and thus, can't prescribe medications.

There are big differences in the educations. PhD's for one.

You keep commenting that you don't go to the doctor if you're not sick. . .so you don't have annual physicals (or biannual)?

Your girls didn't have well baby appointments?

You don't participate in any type of preventative treatments?

I'm not ashamed to say that I established a relationship with a therapist during my last pregnancy since I was predisposed to post-partum depression.

I percieve needing help with needing help. Period. Yes, psychiatrists are used for emotional issues and other things. Not an issue of weakness but inability to deal with life on your own. I just happen to believe you attempt to deal with life first and seek help when it turns out you can't rather than assuming you can't up front.

That's right. Counselors and psychologists are not doctors.
