Very interesting. Particularly the difference in the middle to upper income kids vs low income.

"I personally feel children need the nurture of their parents and the home," she said. "Those early years, that's when they are bonding to their family. That nurturing, only the family can give that."

I tend to agree.

You never answered the questions about what other religious holidays that you choose to celebrate in a non-religious manner.

"BTW, how do you get them to go to bed/sleep when the sun is still up (especially the older two)?"

The same way a parent "gets" a child to do anything - tell them their bodies need to rest, keep them on the same time schedule as during the winter and put room blackout shades on their bedroom windows.

A gifted child is at risk, just as every other child is at risk without the proper education tools and/or style that works for that specific

See, what people do in debates, if they want to communicate and learn, generally, is to work off some commonly accepted definition of common terms and go from there. You, by refusing to acknowledge the commonly accepted definitions of "homeschooling," "Christmas," and I don't know what else, and insisting on your aberrant, personal and subjective definitions, are making true communication impossible, despite the best efforts of those people on the board who seem genuinely to want to debate your ideas. Instead of engaging in dialogue, you are holed up there in your Fortress of Alternate Reality, throwing down missives to the rest of us that remind me of nothing so much as the three year old who doesn't really understand the conventions of polite adult conversation but desperately wants to participate and who has learned that the word "why" generally gets adults going for a long time and so the child can continue to be part of the conversation. Of course, with the three year old, the goal isn't really finding out "why" it's simply keeping the conversation going so the adults will continue to pay attention to her. And with three year olds, it's important for the adults to do that, because three year olds have a learning curve and usually mature in their communication skills. So really, the analogy is limited, hunh?

I I let my kids get off schedule a lot, as you know, but the idea that a child can't go to sleep when it's light out is a little silly -- given the amount of time we've lived in northern Europe, when it's often still light out at 10 pm in the summer time, and light again by 5 am, we'd be in a heap of hurt if the kids required darkness in order to sleep. Then there's the kids in Scandinavia and other areas near or above the Artic Circle. I've heard they sleep all winter and stay awake all summer. Maybe Laura can clarify.

I you ask my children what Christmas means, they will tell you it's about the birth of Jesus Christ, not about Santa Claus.
