Very interesting. Particularly the difference in the middle to upper income kids vs low income.

"I personally feel children need the nurture of their parents and the home," she said. "Those early years, that's when they are bonding to their family. That nurturing, only the family can give that."

I tend to agree.

Hey, I love Purim! Any holiday that involves giving people cookies is o.k. by me!

BTW, is it okay if I pull out my "hyperbole moms" label again?

That seems kind of hypocritical. You claim to be offended by non-christians celebrating christmas, but you do Santa? Doesnt make sense to me.

Answer to Question One: It wasn't called Easter in early Christian times, but the "Paschal" celebration of the resurrection. By the time that Christianity and the Christian celebration of the resurrection hit the Germanic/Anglo-Saxon world, Christians had been observing the resurrection celebration for centuries. "Easter" is the English name for the celebration now, and how it got grafted onto the resurrection celebration I haven't any real clue and anyone who says she does is probably making something up. The historian Bede made something up in the 8th century that's as good as anything I've heard, but he's just guessing too.

Answer to Question Two: I haven't a clue. Ask Momofhk or whatever it is she's calling herself these days.

Santa has a Christian connection -- St Nicholas. He comes to our church and gives the children's sermon during Advent. Seems a little wierd to me, but it's not too much of a stretch for most Christians.

There might be some kind of Germanic pagan celebration called Oestre. Bede thought it was the name of an Angl0-Saxon fertility goddess. But either way, it would be independent of the Christian Pascha, which is Mediterranean in origin and imported by Christians into the Germanic world 5-7 centuries after the fact.

I dont know about it being the name of a fertility goddess, but I think its interesting that it happens to fall near the equinox, and the hare and eggs (both ancient symbols of fertility) have been incorporated into the holiday.

Sorry, but that's mere sophistry. Your views and position on educational opportunity are beside the point, likewise the literal meaning of slurs such as these. If someone calls me an a$$hole, for instance, it's pretty obvious I'm not actually an a$$hole, but the insult remains. When we're referred to in that way, our feelings are hurt; end of story.
