Very interesting. Particularly the difference in the middle to upper income kids vs low income.

"I personally feel children need the nurture of their parents and the home," she said. "Those early years, that's when they are bonding to their family. That nurturing, only the family can give that."

I tend to agree.

Agreed. But I don't know of anyone, personally, that has used a developmentally innappropriate program. I sure haven't.

yes, we have full day kindergarten here. i dont know if the sahm's are lucky but it is the best preschool around so that is what they choose. with only 20 spots available it is very difficult to get in. i signed my son up last year for the 3 year old program this year so he will be assured a spot in the 4 year old program

If I wasnt here, then I *myself* couldnt provide my kids with a satisfactory amount of activities/etc. I would have to pay someone else to do it, in which case I would send them to a preschool/dc combo.

well, obviously it is a *child's* social, emotion, academic, developmental needs. And funny, I thought it was a social and emotional need for kids to have a roof over their heads, to be supervised, to be warm, to not be on the streets.

"Yet earlier in the same post you say that all family members needs are equal. How can they be equal if your child's needs are the most important?"

Please cite where I have stated that my child's needs are the most important.

Again, is what is developmentally appropriate for our child the most important criterion that we use in structuring her days, yes.

Does this mean that my child's needs are the most important, no.

Do you see the difference here?

"Personally, I tend to look at the needs of the *family as a whole* as the most important."

Same here.

Why would you do that when I clearly said my "definition" obviously had room for discrepancies? I was agreeing with you....

Sigh.

I'm twice the age of the SAHs I know.
Even if I *did* SAH, I wouldn't subject myself to playdates :)

Aha. Thank you. That's the difference between many of us and hk. She feels, according to her posts her and many times before, that if any dc component is involved, that there is no true preschool involved.
