Very interesting. Particularly the difference in the middle to upper income kids vs low income.

"I personally feel children need the nurture of their parents and the home," she said. "Those early years, that's when they are bonding to their family. That nurturing, only the family can give that."

I tend to agree.

"Actually, I do think, most of the time, that the children's needs should trump the needs of the adults in the family. And certainly children's needs should trump adults wants. In most cases, adults are in a better position for delayed gratitification; children's needs tend to be more immediate and urgent. If my child and I both NEED to go to the bathroom and we're out in public, it's a good bet that we'll both be happier ten minutes later if he goes first. If my child and my husband are both hungry and I only have one set of snacks in the car, unless husband is driving and suffering from low blood sugar chances are I will feed the kid first and instruct DH to pull over at the nearest C-store for a re-stock. Problems creep into families when needs and wants aren't clearly distinguished. I don't think it's good for a child to have his/her needs not met; nor is it good for a child to have all his/her wants met, and certainly not good to have his/her wants ALWAYS or NEVER placed at the top of a family's priority list."

Very nicely said lois :)

Can you even concieve of children just playing? Or do you try to slap an educational label on everything? Your child does not do "child-led homeschooling/unschooling activities". She plays. The word for it is "play".

edited to add that I'm an idiot. I just realized I had this exact same subthread exchange a few months ago nearly WORD FOR WORD. I must be the last person on the board to realize that this is momofhk

"No, but optimally, things like learning a foreign language or to play a musical instrument should be part of a child's education. And foreign languages are best learned when one has other people to talk to and listen to, and it's kind of hard to play in a band or orchestra all by yourself home with Mom. Team sport, participation in drama and choir carry many benefits as well; unless I had a child who was totally tempermentally unsuited to some or all of the above, I would make sure my child had access to them. Because, well, that's my job as a parent. Optimally, anyway."

Again, very nicely said lois. You seem to be on a roll today.

"Aha. Thank you. That's the difference between many of us and hk. She feels, according to her posts her and many times before, that if any dc component is involved, that there is no true preschool involved."

Completely inaccurate okie.

I have stated no such thing.

Please cite. Or refrain from bold-face lying.

Yep, here too. In fact, some towns in Massachusetts are moving toward an 8 hour school day on an experimental basis. It provides more time to get everything in without it being so hectic.

i remember school starting after labor day too. i believe next school year is starting aug 11 here.......the only positive i see in these earlier and earlier start dates are the summer bd babies who are on the fence about whether or not to start early or wait one more year. these earlier start dates will sooner or later coincide with cut off dates. imo.

that was the reason we bought our house where we did. we are in a small subdivision out in the middle of nowhere, full of kids. the kids play from sunup until sundown, or after during the summer. they are free to roam the subdivision, go from home to home, ride their bikes - we love it. but we also do structured activities.
