Very interesting. Particularly the difference in the middle to upper income kids vs low income.

"I personally feel children need the nurture of their parents and the home," she said. "Those early years, that's when they are bonding to their family. That nurturing, only the family can give that."

I tend to agree.

no, you are not the last person. i didnt realize until just now when you pointed it out. but you are right this thread is a dead ringer.
i will never understand people who feel the need to call thier childrens play anything other than just that. they act as if there is something wrong with just playing. it has got to be a personal ego thing

Hey, you're the one who recommended Koala cabinets to me a while ago and now you're telling me I overpaid! But you're absolutely right, they are overpriced. You're a computer/internet guru and I bet you'll find Koala is practically the only (sturdy) thing out there, especially if you need to accomodate a separate serger machine. I don't know why there's no competition. I justified the cost by thinking of the decades I hope to use it.

I don't see hk1972 that way. My children (ages 6,4 and 2) would not do such a variety of (arguably) educational activities on their own in one day. Instead, my 6 yr-old would play Lego Racers for hours and my 4 yr-old would ride her bike all day. So, I do intervene, begin each day with a variety of arguably educational activites planned and try to follow through.

I also think if you're like hk with no job and only one motivated child, it may be easier to do those things. It would be lazy in that case to just let her child play Lego Racers all day. I know moms (both woh and sah) of singletons who had their child potty-trained by 18 months and site-reading and writing 3-letter words by age 3. It all changed when they had child #2 and 3 or returned to work.

I too would have used preschool/dc combo if working. But even as a sahp, I use the full-day preschool 2 days/week because 1.) no matter how many children I have or playdates I host, I cannot imitate the socialization experience at pre-K (I think I could in their earlier years, but by age 4 in my community, most every child is in some form of preschool.) Also, 2.) our school has full-day Kindergarten, so my kids need preschool if only to prepare them for the long day.

Congrats from me too! You may change your tune about the long-day at preschool if you see how little you can accomplish one-on-one with your older preschooler. For me, I had no problem sitting down one-on-one with my now 6 yr-old when she was in preschool ~ we did pre-math, pre-reading, all of the fun workbooks and computer games because my only other child at the time was very accomodating.

With my son now, it's more difficult (even though my oldest is obviously at school all day).

Our half-day preschool program lets out for lunch and has no afternoon half-day program. So the children who do stay on for the full-day get a lot more one-on-one time with the 3 instructors. I would ideally like to keep my 4 yr-olds in the full day at least 2 days per week (more if possible) because, by afternoon, half of the class is gone and the 3 instructors work with my DD one-on-one. And she's giving up her nap.

"but based on time away from home and time spent with non-family can you explain the difference"

I do not see GS as an extended day substutite childcare program.

If you do, I suppose that's your perogative.

If you don't, then I'm not really sure what your argument is here.
