A 2 year old and 17 month old twins. First she accomplished *that* through two surrogates! Wonderful what modern medicine can do.
Anyway, she doesnt work full time, she consults to several companies so is out of the home one full day then a few hours a day on other days. Sometimes for work, sometimes to go to the gym, etc.
She has a full time live in nanny, and two part time nannies. Essentially they always have someone with them and the kids. She feels she needs two to properly care for her three.
I immediately thought of all the comments her lifestyle would elicit from this board.
The day she and I met she had just come from a 2 hour session at the gym, and was then heading off to go do some shopping.
BTW, she's a complete rock star in industry, having 'retired' a year ago after a 30 year career that took her right up to the top of corporate America so she's definetly *earned* her right to do whatever the heck she wants.
But anyway, she feels she is a super hands on mom. I was curious what others would think?

I'm not talking about going from slums to gentrification, wherein new development is pricing out everyone who used to be able to afford to live in their own neighborhood. The issue there isn't appreciation, it's renovation which isn't the same thing. In those neighborhoods, that stale 3 year old listing would simply be bought at rock bottom prices, torn down and something else built where it used to stand. That's not the same thing as appreciation of what is already in place. What drives THAT is the quality of schools, which is what the rest of us have been talking about.

and for the record, Anne Arundel had the largest increase among those 5 counties in real estate appreciation last year, not Montgomery Co. Forecasts for the next several years expect AA Co. to continue to lead in real estate appreciation, mainly because of BRAC at Fort Meade.

I didn't say homes in bad school districts won't ever sell. hence, your post that you sold 3 properties is basically meaningless to the debate.

It's like the red herring argument people often give about selling property without a real estate agent or without an MLS listing. Of *course* it can be done, but doing it that way necessarily limits your market and carries a much higher risk of limiting your profit. Which is why a sensible home seller won't do it that way.

Same thing with ignoring the single biggest indicator of property value appreciation. People invest in penny stocks all the time, too, but no one with any sense pretends that's a smarter, stronger investment than more established stocks, nor would anyone with a lick of sense ever suggest penny stock investment as the wisest choice for one's priimary monetary investment.

BTW, I never said all potential investors put quality of schools as their top priority in buying a home; I simply said failure to do so is foolish.

Practice MAY help some kids, but it won't help all. Just as lack of practice may not harm some kids, but can harm others.

BTW, small wonder you're trying to suggest home buyers should ignore quality of local schools when buying home properties; you have a vested interest in ensuring they do. You lose sales when buyers are informed and savvy about their home purchases.

Well, we made a very wise choice in the town we chose -- family oriented, affluent and awesome schools -- and let me tell you there is sex, and there are drugs - maybe not on a daily basis but certainly on a regular basis. My son is in 8th grades and I attended a lot of basketball games this winter. There was one boy who had his hands all over a girl -- for all to see. And that's what we parents can see. I shudder to think what happens that we CAN't see. I hear stories all the time. There really is no escaping it - even in the towns one would consider a very wise choice.

I wasn't under the impression that the conversation was only about elementary schools. Having experience dealing with less serious negative situations doesn't mean a child will deal properly with more serious situations. Just as having little experience will automatically mean the kid won't properly deal with the more serious situations.

We spend more hours together in the course of the day. The opportunity to discuss it is more available.

True, but maybe the kid won't talk about everything that happened. How many parents complain that they ask their kids about their day and get a one word answer?
