Militants - are they for real?

Someone on another board posted this link.
http://blogs.babycenter.com/celebrities/2009/04/12/dr-laura-says-all-moms-should-stay-at-home/?scid=momstodd_20090414_A:2&pe=2U8vYLf
It's about Dr. Laura saying that all women should be SAHMs until the child is at least 3 years old.

Whether we're talking about working or staying at home, I can't quite wrap my head around what is going on inside the brains of people that apply the phrase "all women should".

Do you think militants are actually serious, or just trying to get a rise out of others?

I think that comment went back to the question of how to be by your children's side all the time (how I - and others - understood a comment stwinns made) when you have children at two different schools. Her response was "homeschool."

Or the SAHM I know who does nothing but drink Coors Light all day and lets the TV parent her kids.

She LOVES her kids. I can tell. Because they EACH have their own TV.

Personally, I think it's because the emperor has no clothes.

I've been thinking about this a lot. My income is necessary to cover the basics, and there's no question about that. It also is sufficient to provide some extras. I am gathering, from the tone of some posters (in this thread and others), that WOHMs can only be justified in earning enough to cover the basics, and NO MORE. Otherwise we are materialistic, extravagant, neglectful, and selfish. Well, excuse me for being able to earn more than a subsistence level of living.

Personally, I would be interested to know your opinion on what constitutes sufficient planning.

>> Does that make me a SAH parent? ROFLAO <<

According to the links posted earlier, you can call yourself SAH if you feel that you are. So yeah!

I think maybe it's a glitch with the board?

>> Considering most working mothers never intended to stay home, their plan consisted of them working. <<

Do you have any data to back that statistic up? I know several women who had SAH, and were heartbroken that they had to go back to work because financial circumstances required it. In fact, many more are experiencing that right now, because their husbands have been laid off and looking for work for months, and unemployment and savings eventually runs out, and GIVING UP THEIR CHILDREN FOR ADOPTION (or more accurately, into a broken foster care system) is not an acceptable option for them.

Not to mention when they're still tiny, there is very little sweeter than watching them sleep.
