Militants - are they for real?

Someone on another board posted this link.
http://blogs.babycenter.com/celebrities/2009/04/12/dr-laura-says-all-moms-should-stay-at-home/?scid=momstodd_20090414_A:2&pe=2U8vYLf
It's about Dr. Laura saying that all women should be SAHMs until the child is at least 3 years old.

Whether we're talking about working or staying at home, I can't quite wrap my head around what is going on inside the brains of people that apply the phrase "all women should".

Do you think militants are actually serious, or just trying to get a rise out of others?

I'm just curious because this came up on a board I lurk:

What do you think of housewives? That is, women who stay home but are not mothers.

TIA

<To really be important, it would actually have to make a difference.

My sister had the most fabulous childbirth. Two hours from start to finish - it was so quick that she ended up delivering in the back seat of the car in front of the hospital, lol! A pair of midwives ran out to help, and it was all over in about 15mins.

Mine sucked. Three days of induced

< I would never dream of taking hand outs that others had to work hard for just because they're there.

While it is true that long term SAH can have long term consequences 9 months of SAH will not. Especially in a country where it is the norm. >

Thank you.

Actually, my sister works in a daycare and they do take babies from 6wks. Some mothers choose to return to work that early, so the care is available for their babies.

"Out of curiosity, does your society pay students to go to school?"

Denmark does pay people to go to school. Anybody who is enrolled in higher education gets a grant to cover basic living expenses. The schooling itself is, in virtually all cases, tuition free. This is done exactly for the reasons you give, to do everything possible to have a work force as highly educated as possible. It seems to be paying off, since Denmark has high productivity, low unemployment and a very healthy trade balance.

You can also get a sabbatical from civil service jobs for the purpose of pursuing any kind of ongoing education. I am not sure exactly how it works, but know that my cousin who is a postman got a year off (fully paid) a few years ago to take some HS courses. Most businesses also offer ongoing education to their employees, on company time. My mother got a one-on-one Berlitz course, for example, while at her last job.

Oh, and if you are at university and are receiving the grant, you get paid parental leave there too. I.e. you get 1 or 2 semesters off from the U with no reduction in your grant. My SIL had both her kids while getting her degrees (she has a BA and an MA). Many people get the degrees and the diapers over with at the same time that way.

The only downside, so SIL said, was having the BF police come every three days making a search for formula in the house. I think it is a 50-buck fine or so if they find any. If there are further offenses the fine goes up.

That last bit is a joke, obviously, the rest is not.

maybe she doesn't expect any differences in how her child 'turns out' maybe , like me, she doesn't really care about that ....maybe...just maybe...it made her family happy.
