Someone on another board posted this link.
http://blogs.babycenter.com/celebrities/2009/04/12/dr-laura-says-all-moms-should-stay-at-home/?scid=momstodd_20090414_A:2&pe=2U8vYLf
It's about Dr. Laura saying that all women should be SAHMs until the child is at least 3 years old.

Whether we're talking about working or staying at home, I can't quite wrap my head around what is going on inside the brains of people that apply the phrase "all women should".

Do you think militants are actually serious, or just trying to get a rise out of others?

Yes, my career change is a good example of what goes wrong when you put what you want in front of what you should do.

"There's plenty of time for me to worry about what makes me happy when they're off having families of their own."

Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen. As I learned last week when a good friend I have known since kindergarten died of a staff infection at 45. There must be balance for all in a family. No martyrs. Carpe diem.

"Why would the quality of life be better with less income?

Quality of life includes things like retirement, saving for college, a rainy day fund and knowing you can always support your kids. "

Both time and money have diminishing rates of return. Once one reaches a threshold for each, then additional amounts don't impact as much. If one parent makes enough to do all of the above- then the additional time at home for a sahp might be more beneficial that the additional income.

We have saved for retirement, college, rainy day fund.... and still have a sahp. Some has been the good fortune to graduate without debt- so we could start saving in our twenties (before we even met each other or had children). Some has been because we were/are prudent and thrifty in our spending/saving.

But many people don't live so close ot the financial line that 9 months of lost income matters to retirement date and overall standard of living.

"Most families I know can't simply drop one income for 9 months without doing something like spending savings or going into debt."

That's because you don't know many financially stable families.

Are you putting me on? You really don't understand the term "quality of life" without references to finances?

"SAH costs the family financially in most cases."
