Militants - are they for real?

Someone on another board posted this link.
http://blogs.babycenter.com/celebrities/2009/04/12/dr-laura-says-all-moms-should-stay-at-home/?scid=momstodd_20090414_A:2&pe=2U8vYLf
It's about Dr. Laura saying that all women should be SAHMs until the child is at least 3 years old.

Whether we're talking about working or staying at home, I can't quite wrap my head around what is going on inside the brains of people that apply the phrase "all women should".

Do you think militants are actually serious, or just trying to get a rise out of others?

I stopped listening to the scary stories about a month before the birth. I figured I had all the information I could get, and now I was just going to try to reeeelaxxx

That is SO stupid. Isn't it better that a woman gets some help at home rather than going solo?

Sorry if I have that mentality because my children ARE special and the system is NOT serving them- despite NCLB.

DH's company has a 4 week parental (Dad's too) leave. Unfortunately, it was enacted the year after YDS was born. Our school district has parental leave for employees regardless of gender. In fact one of the few male teachers at YDS's school will miss the last two weeks of school this year as a result. They were trying to time it for summer, but came up a bit short.

Yes, Mommy Olympics preceded NCLB. It does not therefore follow that Mommy Olympics was the driving force behind getting NCLB instituted. NCLB is actually the antithesis of Mommy Olympics. Mommy Olympics is all about trying to get your kid to excel past the other kids. NCLB is all about trying to get all kids literally on the same page. The goals of Mommy Olympics and the goals of NCLB are in opposition to each other.

Exactly! In order for the Mommy Olympics hypothesis to be true, district-wide curriculum changes would have to be instituted by kindy teachers.

What if the second income is going almost entirely for debt repayment and savings?

You underestimate the percentage of the population in that situation. It's much more than 1%, and in major metros, it's probably 10 or 15%.

I only have about $9,000 in one retirement account after working nearly 4 years here -- I have about $25,000 total in my other one (it used to be near $40,000 and I lost that much of it due to the economy)
