Militants - are they for real?

Someone on another board posted this link.
http://blogs.babycenter.com/celebrities/2009/04/12/dr-laura-says-all-moms-should-stay-at-home/?scid=momstodd_20090414_A:2&pe=2U8vYLf
It's about Dr. Laura saying that all women should be SAHMs until the child is at least 3 years old.

Whether we're talking about working or staying at home, I can't quite wrap my head around what is going on inside the brains of people that apply the phrase "all women should".

Do you think militants are actually serious, or just trying to get a rise out of others?

Well, there are exceptions, so I guess usually would be the right word.

I talked to a friend this weekend who's a SAHM.

Is your husband alive?

Is your husband disabled?

Are you still married?

Have you become disabled?

Does anyone in your family have an expensive health condition?

The list goes on and on.

I am the first to admit that my family has had its share of good luck along the way in our financial lives. For instance, both of us bought real estate in California BEFORE it got outrageously expensive, and both of us sold our homes at large profits before the real estate bubble burst. We moved to the midwest and used the profits of one of our homesales to buy a house with something like 85% down. We have never had a mortgage for over five years. That is more luck than planning. We were lucky enough to both find jobs in the same zip code; not something most academic couple are lucky enough to do. We have been lucky that neither of us has had major health problems. There is a lot of luck, or grace, involved. We do not take that for granted.

Susannah brought luck into the discussion, but I do believe that it has a great deal to do with financial planning.

Going with that theme, what about the following...

A sahp with children who attend traditional school?

A sahp with children who are grown?

A working parent that never uses daycare?

A working parent that only works during school hours/days?

A sahp who doesn't parent despite the fact that children are home?

I agree that good planning is an excellent thing, but as others have said, I don't see how
