New to Board-looking to be a V.A.-WAHM

Good Evening-I am hoping to find some assistance. I am an Administrative Assistant for a growing corporation-and have my Associate Degree in Business Administration-I have recently been notified that I am as high as I will be able to go on their corporate ladder and am nearly maxed out with regard to my salary. I am the only person in the office, so I handle a plethura of responsibilities-for example assisting with payroll, running Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, troubleshooting, general ledger reconciling, deposits, running monthly reports, typing correspondence-just pretty much anything regarding the office. I am 28 years old with 2 small children. My children are watched by my mother-in-law whom this weekend called me a neglegent parent because I allowed my 8 year old 100 lb daughter carry my 2 year old 29 lb son down the stairs when he was crying. I now feel really comfortable allowing her to watch my children all day (which she has been doing for about 5 years now)-my parenting is always under scruteny. For these reasons I need (not only want) to work from home. I understand it can be difficult to maintain other adult contact, but I am willing to face that challenge if it means having a better handle on work-life balance. I just can not find legit work at home ops. Is there anyone who has provided virtual assistance to companies? Perhaps in the administrative/accounting field? How did you go about building your clientel? I need steady work-guaranteed income, and be able to be there for my children. (Not to say that people who work aren't there for their children-they are it is just here child care will cost me $350 per week and I make 740 take home every 2 weeks yes that is 20 per week if I find traditional day care so I can continue to work). Does anyone have any advice-I am open to anything.

Thanks:>)

This is a debate board. Not a support board. I don't think you'll get the answers you're looking for here.

I'll be blunt. The opportunities for clerical WAH are VERY limited. And if you want to market yourself as clerical staff to small offices that can't support full-time clerical staff, you're going to have to seriously improve your writing, editing and proofing skills, because they will expect those to be top-notch. Based on your post here, they need work.

You're going to have to be a go-getter, a self-starter and self-promoter. You'll have to do all your own networking and likely from scratch. And you're kidding yourself if you think you can run a proper WAH business in a professional way without child care.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but WAH is not the big fix for childcare that it often seems and there simply aren't that many clients willing to tolerate interruptions with you from your kids. And kids find Mommy on the phone to be irresistible.

I'll add the Work At Home message board: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppwahm?redirCnt=1

And, I second needing child care as a wahm. I run a dressmaking business at home. There is no way that I could wah without childcare. The only wahm I know that could wah without childcare is my daycare provider. When her children were young, they were part of her daycare. And when they were teens, they were assistants in her business.

Good luck! I have to second Chris' post, though. WAH is not going to solve childcare problems. I WAH and I simply couldn't do it without the kids being in school (and some aftercare in the case of dd). It's not possible to put in a full days' work with small children in the vicinity.

I have spoken to my mother in law on many occassions about her "advice" and nothing seems to change.
