Parents and school involvement

My question stems from a personal experience. My middle child is starting kindergarten next week. I've become fairly close with one of my dd's friend's moms- this is her first child entering the school system. She WOH, I do not, plus I have experience with the school, so she's been calling me with questions and comments.

It started to go bad when she called to complain that the kindy orientation is during the day- when she is working. Then it led to complaints about the parents' read aloud program (when the kids are in library) and other opportunities for volunteerism in the school. I get that these things aren't convenient for her, but I'm getting annoyed with the complaining. How can the kids have an orientation at night when they go to school during the day? None of these events are mandatory for parents or kids. And plenty of activities are scheduled for evenings: Back to school night, the PTA picnic, etc.

She thinks because she can't participate, no one should be able to, apparently. Plenty of WOHP do show up for these things. I think she's being unrealistic if she thought she could put a couple of kids through school without ever taking a vacation day. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

I would rather have my children in remedial English if they needed to be in remedial English as well. That wasn't the question. The question was, one school assumes that average students can achieve above average results, given the right circumstances, and the other school doesn't. You don't want to push an "average student" to achieve above average results. I don't see anything wrong with pushing average students to achieve if they are capable of doing so.

What research?

What colleges can your child get into with poor academics even if they have great social skills?

Some kids never feel like they fit in. What then?

Well, first I don't see how being happy = an educated person, so you will need to explain that connection, because I am not seeing it.

Both of my kids are great at memorizing things, so test scores really aren't a judge of what they are learning and I'm sure there are many other kids good at taking tests, especially multiple choice tests, lol.

i have never had a child get a d or an f on a report card but if that was the grade they received and i knew and the teacher knew they had learned the material i would be okay with the grade. but i cant imagine it ever getting that far.

I know you're not in favor of TERC math, but the part of TERC that my district uses combats just this very thing. It allows students to use whatever reasoning works for them to solve the problem. Any reasoning/strategy that leads to the correct answer (well, except a cheating strategy! lol) efficiently and accurately (iow, it wasn't a fluke that the reasoning workd) is accepted and considered correct.

Because often they are not, in daily classroom work because that classroom work is aimed at the largest percentage of the class.
