Parents and school involvement

My question stems from a personal experience. My middle child is starting kindergarten next week. I've become fairly close with one of my dd's friend's moms- this is her first child entering the school system. She WOH, I do not, plus I have experience with the school, so she's been calling me with questions and comments.

It started to go bad when she called to complain that the kindy orientation is during the day- when she is working. Then it led to complaints about the parents' read aloud program (when the kids are in library) and other opportunities for volunteerism in the school. I get that these things aren't convenient for her, but I'm getting annoyed with the complaining. How can the kids have an orientation at night when they go to school during the day? None of these events are mandatory for parents or kids. And plenty of activities are scheduled for evenings: Back to school night, the PTA picnic, etc.

She thinks because she can't participate, no one should be able to, apparently. Plenty of WOHP do show up for these things. I think she's being unrealistic if she thought she could put a couple of kids through school without ever taking a vacation day. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

<<Memorization is excellent not just for tests. How do you think we remember everything that we use now?>>

I don't know about you but for me, it's because I have learned it, applied it and not just memorized it.

That wasn't the point of my post, so I have no idea how your posts relates to mine.

I agree. This is why so many people can't answer questions on shows like,"Are you smarter than a fifth grader." they have forgotten memorized information. I wonder how many people here can still diagram a sentence?;-)

You should read back then. I have said over and over I am involved with my dd's work everyday. Every year I have been required to look over and sign her homework and weekly status reports of how she did for the week. I know what she is learning, how well she knows the work and how the teacher thinks she had done for that week.

No one has said it, but really, do you think if someone WAS, would they come out and tell you?

Not me, I memorized in English class, I didn't learn it.

You have? Okay then, I certainly don't remember you saying that. I also am not so interested that I will read back through to find where(or if) you said it. I am left wondering why you said you trust the schools to do their job if you are monitoring your dd's progress on a daily basis.

What does that have to do with anything?

Probably not. Just as no one would admit to accepting mediocrity when their kids are more capable.
