Parents and school involvement

My question stems from a personal experience. My middle child is starting kindergarten next week. I've become fairly close with one of my dd's friend's moms- this is her first child entering the school system. She WOH, I do not, plus I have experience with the school, so she's been calling me with questions and comments.

It started to go bad when she called to complain that the kindy orientation is during the day- when she is working. Then it led to complaints about the parents' read aloud program (when the kids are in library) and other opportunities for volunteerism in the school. I get that these things aren't convenient for her, but I'm getting annoyed with the complaining. How can the kids have an orientation at night when they go to school during the day? None of these events are mandatory for parents or kids. And plenty of activities are scheduled for evenings: Back to school night, the PTA picnic, etc.

She thinks because she can't participate, no one should be able to, apparently. Plenty of WOHP do show up for these things. I think she's being unrealistic if she thought she could put a couple of kids through school without ever taking a vacation day. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

I do agree with her whine about the orientation during the day versus night. Our school had our open house for kindergarten during the afternoon - when I questioned the principal about this I was given the response that it was " more convenient for the teachers that way because they had an inservice that day so it could just follow that. Well even though it is not mandatory to attend like you said, I think it is good for BOTH parents to be able to attend and if they work even one just part time like myself it makes it very difficult to attend. Just thoughts....

Oh I agree, but to me that is the actual application of the curriculum, not knowing what the curriculum is.

Of course we talk every day, honestly I didn't think I needed to mention the obvious points.

Personally I am glad that our principal feels that a connection with the parents is an important thing.

Is this just specific for me as an insult or across the board for any child who changes schools?

So then one has to ask, why are you judging others situations and experiences?

Can you give me a link to where anyone has put down any move of yours?

Ya, uh huh, lol.

I would love to see what support you have or what reasoning you have to support your theory about children not benefiting from a school change or changes.

Granted I don't read all the posts and we most likely read different threads from time to time but, I don't ever recall anyone opposing lots of residential moves or stating that their world would fall apart if they moved from their family and friends....can you provide a link or a post number to where and when this was said?

Well I do drop off and pick up my kids at school pretty much on a daily basis, unless dh picks up/drops off.
