Parents and school involvement

My question stems from a personal experience. My middle child is starting kindergarten next week. I've become fairly close with one of my dd's friend's moms- this is her first child entering the school system. She WOH, I do not, plus I have experience with the school, so she's been calling me with questions and comments.

It started to go bad when she called to complain that the kindy orientation is during the day- when she is working. Then it led to complaints about the parents' read aloud program (when the kids are in library) and other opportunities for volunteerism in the school. I get that these things aren't convenient for her, but I'm getting annoyed with the complaining. How can the kids have an orientation at night when they go to school during the day? None of these events are mandatory for parents or kids. And plenty of activities are scheduled for evenings: Back to school night, the PTA picnic, etc.

She thinks because she can't participate, no one should be able to, apparently. Plenty of WOHP do show up for these things. I think she's being unrealistic if she thought she could put a couple of kids through school without ever taking a vacation day. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

Doesn't change the fact that preschool isn't always necessary.

In the case of my dd it was tap and ballet.

I am curious though, what makes you think getting together with the same group for over an hour without mom present is so very important? I can see where this may be true for SOME kids but certainly not ALL.

Because she will not need the discipline to sit in a classroom with other students everyday.

honestly i had forgotten until it was mentioned that you homeschool, i really dont keep track of who does what on these boards. i never said preschool was necessary only that waht is done in a preschool can not be accomplished in a home. some, of course, but not all. but we all have different ideas of what we fell is important for our children to learn.

I'm sure it isn't but the majority of kids going into kindergarten now do have some preschool experience. I personally do not know why someone would NOT want their children in a preschool setting for at least one year.

I feel the same. I am completely comfortable leaving my child at our day care but not in child-minding places at the gym or pretty much anywhere. Especially if they do not require a license. Licensing usually involves criminal record checks and meeting many standards. No guarantee but it does increase my comfort level.

Thanks for asking! She is doing wonderfully.School officially starts next Tuesday, but she has practice everyday for volleyball. She got excellent grades last year, played on the volleyball team, and made so many friends. What more could a mom ask for really?:-)

What grades are your boys going into? Did they start yet?

edited to add that yes it is her second year.:-)

You realize that she has more than one child that she homeschools, correct?
