Parents and school involvement

My question stems from a personal experience. My middle child is starting kindergarten next week. I've become fairly close with one of my dd's friend's moms- this is her first child entering the school system. She WOH, I do not, plus I have experience with the school, so she's been calling me with questions and comments.

It started to go bad when she called to complain that the kindy orientation is during the day- when she is working. Then it led to complaints about the parents' read aloud program (when the kids are in library) and other opportunities for volunteerism in the school. I get that these things aren't convenient for her, but I'm getting annoyed with the complaining. How can the kids have an orientation at night when they go to school during the day? None of these events are mandatory for parents or kids. And plenty of activities are scheduled for evenings: Back to school night, the PTA picnic, etc.

She thinks because she can't participate, no one should be able to, apparently. Plenty of WOHP do show up for these things. I think she's being unrealistic if she thought she could put a couple of kids through school without ever taking a vacation day. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here?

We could too, and do. But we do see the need to put them in preschool as we can't provide a *real* class room environment, and we can't provide a dozen other kids their age, and that kind of social interaction.
And yes I know they can get social interaction other ways, and we do those *too* -- but for us, preschool is ideal and the kids love it.

my ds is starting preschool again next week. i know they won't guarantee a thing there, either. optional programs like that are my call..and if it helps him get introduced to a traditional k classroom better than if i had him home all the time with me,we're good.

btw jennie, how is your ds? did you get him tested?

They layed them off because they were with the company for so many years (30 yrs. of one employee) and made the most money. They did layoff newbies also but many of the people were there over 10 years and many in managerial positions. "

So how exactly does that make your case that the company promotes on who one knows not what one does? Tenure doesnt = productivity btw.

My company does VERY well but the insider trading DID have many of the executives making tons of money at one time."

If there was really insider trading, they'd be in jail. Real insider trading eventually gets found.

" Now they are making it legal to do so to get their stocks now instead of when they leave. I have to wait until I leave to take mine which will be very nice if they price of the stock stays up."

Again, what the heck does this have to do with who you know, vs what you do and how you perform? My guess is the CEO does *more* productive work and matters more to the companies success than you. No offense. You have to "wait" either becuase of vesting or other terms of your employment. Not due to "who" the CEO knows or who you do or don't.
The rules for you have to be the same for everyone else at your level with respect to stock -- otherwise the companies policiies are illegal. And if its public, I don't buy that.

You are confusing insider trading with shorting stock.
I'd short your companies stock -- if what you told me is true (which I'm sure it isnt) about how they promote or don't. Bad policies = bad performance eventually and I'd likely short that stock.
Now I wouldnt *really* because that would also be insider trading;)
Insider trading means that the average person in the street wouldnt know and couldnt find the information on the company reasonably. If a CEO ditched a ton of stock knowing the price would go down -- that's insider trading.

Believe me, I know tenure does NOT = productivity. I had a boss that did NOTHING and they kept her until she retired. She got her job because there was an opening and even though she knew nothing, the head of the company liked her.

Of course it does and that is why there are policies now that it can not be done. It was obvious that everyone had sold some as the stock plummeted.

The CEO has been with the company for 30 years. Everyone under executive director has to wait to cash in their stock until they leave. I have been vested for the last 7 years. And, yes, it is a public company.

That is great. Mine is a town camp and this year was a lotto. We were lucky to get in for the 8 weeks. I do not have to pay for field trips anymore but they also do not take big ones-bowling, movies, plays. They used to go to amusement parks and such but then that was extra and I think people did not want to pay more. She LOVED it this year as she was in the next age group. Cross my fingers she will get in again next year!

I probably am confusing it. Years ago, there was insider trading going on and that is why there is a policy now. It was VERY obvious that there was.
