Ds has to have tubes. We saw the ENT today and although his ears *look* good, he failed the ear-drum-movement test, meaning he has a build up of fluid behind them. So, he goes to surgery on the 16th.

As sad as I am to see this happen, I know that we have exhausted all other options and this is the best end to a miserable winter.

The worst part is that the little guy loves to swim (jumps off the edge of the pool right in, head and all). So, we'll have to just let him splash around and make sure his head doesn't go under (we'll use earplugs too.)

Anyhoo ...

Hollie, I know that no one wants the tubes, but every kid I've know who had them did very well. Some of the kids were able to swim with custom fitted ear plugs. They use really bright colors so the kids will like them better.

Keep us posted.

Oh that's no good! I'm sorry he won't get to swim.

On a brighter note, a friend of mine had her little guy 'done' last week. She was at the hospital with him at eight thirty in the morning, they took him to theatre at nine thirty and at quarter to ten they wheeled him out, and they were home by eleven! He had pain for a day or so, but now he has energy levels way up sky high and is happy and sleeping well. His mum hadn't realised how much he had been brought low by the constant pain and deafness and says he is a new little man :) So I hope it is just as straightforward and successful for you and your ds!

Best wishes,

Jane

HIJACK! My folks are home!! And almostfreeof3, I heard from your "big boy" tonight! LOL! I sent him a pre-paid calling card with my phone number in BIG BOLD font on the letter I wrote him. We talked for about 20 minutes. He talked to my DS1 who I thought would split his face from grinning because he was talking to his BIG cousin!

Haven't seen mom and dad yet. We'll see the Thursday when they pick the boys up from school.

I think he was going to call Kurt, too. After all, his uncle is going to be 47 on Wed. so I told him it would be a nice birthday present for Kurt. (Misty's all over me. Difficult to type with a 12.3 pound kitty on my lap. She loooooves her mommy!)

that is way cool. we used the ear plugs that mold to their ears and they were really good, but that little head band is extra security. i also have heard of putting a drop of alcohol, or at least a q-tip with alcohol in there, as it is supposed to dry the ears. check with your doctor. i think that helps too.

my "baby"(the 15yo) had tubes when he was about 14 months and it made all the difference in the world. he kept ear infections for 10 months until there was no choice. you will be glad you did this, i promise. good luck!!

Hollie if it makes you feel any better, all the kids I've ever known who had tubes did very well. And with their ear plugs, they could swim just like the all the other kids. I don't think your ds will have any trouble.
