There's something on this board that has been bothering me, and I hope I can articulate it.

So you re-do the chart every year.

LOL! They always ask how old your baby is -- so that they can compare milestones!

I was just saying that comparisons between peers happens. Besides, I fully expect my dd to be "held back" in the 10-18 month "Waddlers" group when she turns 19 months. She is on track WRT all the gross motor milestones but she's just not as good as the other kids in the group. Maybe the class is full of some weirdo future olympians, but do I necessarily want her in the next group with all the jumpers and flippers when she's not even running yet? What's the purpose in that?

And?? I care about how he is doing compared to the level expected for his age, not whether or not child x has better handwriting than him or child y is worse in math.

> OK. I may not find much benefit *for myself* either, but it wouldn't at all *bother* me either.

That assumes that there is ability grouping. Dd's school did no ability grouping until 3rd grade, so the issue of being challenged or bored was irrelevent. I went through tons of testing but until I was in high school, there was no class comparison. Same with dd, the only comparative measure of student progress on paper was the AR point list(which is a whole 'nother debate.) I did, however, discuss her progress with her teacher and she was able to let me know how dd was doing. There is no need for a class ranking in K for a parent to be able to assess her child's progress wrt the class.

Yes I do. I think it is irrelvent to my child's progress - esp in K where the norm is all over the map. When we attended our conference, we talked about our child. I wasn't even interested in the other children to be quite honest. Now had she brought up concerns, I may have wondered where he compares - and I might have asked. I would then expect an answer, but to offer the information to all parents makes no sense and I question the motivation.

Will your youngest be in swim meets? If so, then he doesn't need a chart.

Ok, I'll go with the argument for basing it on an individual school, but sample size cannot be dismissed, imo. As for the researcher...why not a starving grad student :-)?

"Honestly, I just don't see academics as a competetive sport and maybe this is based on my experiences with the Swedish school system."

I must have missed that discussion.
