"SAH doesn't support change, it supports going backwards to the 1950's,"

Statement in a post below.

I wholeheartedly disagree. To me, SAH is a choice. How is that going back to the 1950s, when a lot of women didn't have much of a choice.

They are not expected - getting the work done is expected. The "awards" are something fun. I find it rather bizarre that parents are against their children having something fun every once in a while at school. School can get rather long and boring for some kids, why not let them have something fun to break up the monotony?

In our school, the merit linked pay does not go to the teacher's salaries. It goes into a different area of the budget - purchasing supplies, equipment, text books, etc. so that the teachers don't have to buy them allowing them to keep more of the salary they rightfully earn. If you wanted to, you could do a round about argument that this increases the teachers' salaries but it doesn't. It increases purchasing power of the school.

So, because her child is completely different from your child, she has somehow failed as a parent? Don't do the "I said ME and I said MY CHILD" The implication that she should be uncomfortable is there.

My son is very sensitive. He gets very upset when other kids win things he doesn't. (I know, we're working on it) That said, when other kids win the "Caught Being Good" award, or some kids get a jelly bean at the end of class because they were the most well behaved team that week, I can explain to him, "Well you need to try to be better behaved," or explain to him what he can do. If he see other kids getting the perfect attendance awards, and gets upset, what exactly do I tell him? "Sorry, Charles, maybe next year you can try harder and not get the flu." It just makes absolutely no sense.

That's why we have been saying the rewards are extremely small. No way does the amount of time my child spent reading = the value of a pizza hut coupon. Each of my children have received way more than a pizza hut coupon in terms of education, love of reading, etc so why is there any kind of harm in a little something extra? there is non.

Because the kids did the work and are entitled to a little recognition for it. Kids like fun things, why deprive them of that?

Some kids have not mastered delayed gratification. They need small steps along the way to keep them going for the large prize - education.

A baseball game is a baseball game. I also would never take my child out of school to go to a baseball game. You've seen one game, you've seen them all. There are plenty of off-school days to make priceless memories.

I would dare to bet that most schools that have reading reward programs do it similar to the way ours does. At the beginning of the program the students take a computer test to determine their reading level. They are required to read books at that level or above or they do not get credit for the book. They are also required to take a computerized quiz or do a "book talk" on every book that they read. If they don't pass the test, they have to read the book again, until they comprehend it. They take the reading level determining tests periodically through the year and if their reading level is not increasing, they are put into a different reading program until they have an increase. They simply are not allowed to read easy books just for the sake of reading, they have to push themselves or not get credit.
