"SAH doesn't support change, it supports going backwards to the 1950's,"

Statement in a post below.

I wholeheartedly disagree. To me, SAH is a choice. How is that going back to the 1950s, when a lot of women didn't have much of a choice.

Using food to celebrate us found in every single culture and in every instance of recorded history. We are not unique in doing it. Although we are very lucky to live in a time and place when we can blithely ignore the importance of food and all it symbolizes because we take it for granted.

Don't be sad that no one posted about the 5 year anniversary of Sep.11. Be sad that you didn't know there is a "Personal: Not For Debate" folder which is where that thread is and has been since this Sep.11. The thread is called "5 years later" and is easiest to spot by its Sep.11 start date.

The treats associated with a holiday are not rewards for doing something. They aren't a tool of behavioral conditioning. That's the difference.

She said it wasn't your fault; what more do you want from her?

And for the record, my Mom is still alive and so is my MIL, but living so far from her, I often cook some of our favorite foods. It helps us feel at home when we're not. There's no crime in that.

And as for the "excuse to overeat" nonsense, I suggest you refresh your familiarity with the concept of "feast". Feasts are INTENDED to be meals at which one eats more than normal. That's why they're feasts.

I understand that...I too payed attention in elementary school. However, because as you said we are in no shortage of food right now, our family (and probably millions of others) take it as an opportunity to be thankful for the MANY things we have.

Again, I paid attention in elementary school, I understand about the pilgrims, etc. Thanks for the lesson though.

And I'm not sure what makes you think I haven't been to a Passover Sedar. The food is symbolic, but the meaning exists beyond the food. It is not necessary to the holiday.

again, I UNDERSTAND THAT. But NOW we celebrate it for different reasons. There is nothing wrong with that.

Every significant celebration in the Old Testament, as handed down by God to Moses, revolves around feasts--they are commanded by God. They're holy and sacred.

In human tradition *most* of the important celebrations involve food in a significant and profound way. There are also fasts, but they are typically preparatory to a celebration, not part of it and those are typically followed by a traditional feast.
